People said VtMB was amazing when it launched, it just went way under the radar because HL2 released on literally the same day. I played the game a lot before fan patches started coming out and still enjoyed it.

Always seemed fine to me. If you actually bother to learn how the combat systems work and you put points into combat stats, it's better than most other RPGs.
