Are random encounters in RPGs pure shit for padding? I'm playing Pokemon Emerald now and they are really becoming insufferable during the last quarter of the game. Literally like 70% of the game is spent in encounter screens instead of the game world.
If the emulator didn't have the turbo function to speed past all that shit I would have probably lost my mind already.
Random encounters
Repels, retard
>waste your money on thousands of repels that wear off every 30 seconds because our game mechanic is shit
okay retard
I don't fight random encounters in Pokemon campaigns (unless I'm catching something). The EXP gain just overlevels you.
the game has infinite money, and what else are you spending money on?
>having money problems in fucking pokemon
Might as well stop playing video games altogether if you're this bad.
What the fuck? How the fuck do you run out of money in a Pokémon game past gen 2?
Depends on the game and if there are evasion skills/items. I can agree random encounters can be ass at times. If you are that upset about random encounters, go play later gen SaGa games, you can at least avoid encounters if you do not like them.
Unless you skip every trainer battle you’ll always have more money than you’ll ever need
What are you saving your money for? Excalibur?
Are you serious right now?
Only reason you would save that much up is to get gambling coins than spending time at the game corner for TMs and Pokemon in general. Either that or getting Ultra Balls because compared to Ruby and Sapphire, the Pickups in Emerald scale based on Level, so you don't get Ultra Balls and Nuggets from Zigzagoons like you would in Ruby/Sapphire.
>waste your money
It's fucking dirt cheap
Here's a further list of reasons why you're retarded:
>cleanse tag
>black flute
>smoke ball
>run away
>poke toy
>fly
yeah, i hate it when random encounters can obstruct you. just put them on the side of the route or give me a way to avoid encounters (besides repels)
I have a team of shitmon all about level 33 and I can't bear clair in soul silver
you are not adressing the fact that repels is a shitty game mechanic that negates another shitty game mechanic. wtf are you all talking about the amount of money? why not just fucking remove random encounters instead of having to add repels that remove a dumb mechanic?
Wow good job entirely missing the point, faggots. Random encounters are a shitty mechanic for padding game time, while also being incredibly annoying and disrupting immersion.
Where the fuck did I say I had problems with money? Repels are just replacing one annoyance with another, by having to re-apply them every 30 sec if I'm moving around. How is that good game design?
random or not isn't the problem. if the gameplay sucks then too many fights is tedious. earthbound doesnt have random encounters but it also has too many
Use repels.
>game have mechanic
>me no like mechanic
>game have option to bypass mechanic
>me no like option
>me want mechanic removed
does Zig Forums really...?
Cringe
Based
its really too early for this bait
>this is annoying
>that is annoying
>everything is annoying
Then don’t play the fucking game, retard
>NOOOOOOOOOOO STOP TALKING ABOUT HOW RETARDED I AM PLEASE CHANGE THE SUBJECT
>why not just fucking remove random encounters
You realise later games did this right? Plus it's to encourage you looking for new pokemon to catch and try out using. In emerald's case the pokemon selection is great, so you have no reason to complain.
ahhh I see you too are a man of archaic rng mechanics
I liked how in XY there was that area where dust clouds would wander randomly, and if you touched one you got an encounter. They did it because the enemies there were Digletts (with Arena Trap) which would have been annoying, but I enjoyed them making a little skill game of avoiding the clouds, and I always thought it would make a nice addition to the rest of the games. Just replace dust clouds with bubbles/grass rustling/etc as desired based on the encounter terrain.
>me play 16 year old game
>me complain game is outdated on Zig Forums
>me smart
user, i...
>cleanse tag
>smoke ball
nice, so I have to waste the hold slot of my pokemon for that shit AND waste more time swapping it out when I need them to fight seriously
>black flute
available 3/4 in the game and works the same as repel, so doesnt really fix the core problem
>fly
available literally during the last quarter of the main story and you can only fly to cities, not everywhere, doesnt solve the issue
uhh, RNGtards seething?
I always knew this board was casual but i never knew it was this bad
at least you're given the option, idiot. plus you could also get a Pokemon with an ability to keep wild encounters at bay/give him a cleanse tag.
>fight seriously
>fight seriously
>fight seriously
>Pokémon Emerald
Low IQ retard detected
The game itself is good though, it just has archaic shit in it.
I understand that it's there so you could catch pokemon and level them up, but it's incredibly repetitive and slow.
Because it’s nearly 20 years old
old games tend to be outdated yeah thats because modern video games mechanics have evolved and developed past old gameplay designs which were created because of technical constraints. calling someone retarded because they call an outdated game outdated is fucking retarded. I bet you're this butthurt because you can't handle your precious childhood game being called out that its fucking awful as it rightly should be. I suppose people shitting on morrowinds combat are retarded because ??????
This board is retarded and no one is adressing the point you're making. Go somewhere else if you want to actually discuss video games, OP.
fucking this
if you have to "fight seriously" in fucking pokemon you need to remove your below-freezing IQ from the gene pool ASAP
if you care this much theres probably a game shark code to turn off random encounters, but that probably is wasting time too
Random encounters are fine if the game is designed to give them a purpose. In many jrpgs you can just spam attack and heal up after the battle and they're mostly pointless. Random encounters should be deadly and quick requiring you to think about which targets to prioritize and to balance offense and defense. But more importantly they should make you think about how you build your characters and make you seriously considers going for skills that are good in random encounters but bad for bosses.
And to be clear the encounters being random isn't that important, having them as fixed locations on the map isn't that different unless it's trivial to skip them.
