Just like people, character models look flat and lame under incomplete lighting or the wrong lens(/projection). Even the best characters/costumes look kind of shitty in an editor at anything like near-fullbright.
Also the more dramatic the lighting a character is intended for, the worse they'll look under normal lights, because you tweak a bunch of shit to the extreme since all that'll be visible in the end is shit like the shadows/transillumination/details you specifically overdid so they'd be visible. Sometimes you even use completely the wrong colours, like it's a 1920s black and white film.
