Are there any games out there besides TLoU2 where you switch to playing as one of the antagonists part way through the story for more than just a one-off mission?

Note that I'm not talking about "You were the villain all along!" twists like in KotOR or Spec Ops: The Line, I specifically mean where you switch to playing as a -different- character who had been a villain/antagonist up until that point.

Golden Sun.
>That's a sequel
It was one game until they ran out of room.

Sequels are fine too, thanks!

You basically play the start of Assassin's Creed III as one of the main antagonists.

Warcraft 3

Wasn't one of the Legacy of Kain games for Xbox like this?

Abby disgust me but since you asked nicely:
Both R-Type Tactics games technically qualify.

People keep saying this was an overdone twist yet they struggle to name even one game that did it.

you play less than 1 hour....

Breath of fire IV

Still more than one mission. Or are the goalposts shifting to make this a troll thread about Abby?

Halo 2

Transformers War for Cybertron.
its not bad but it does get repetitive after a while

The Getaway, kinda. You switch to playing a cop who is after Hammond. He's not the real antagonist.

Seeing everyone lose their shit over their moviegame sequel was the best thing since the GoT fags got btfo

MGS2. Game starts as you playing Snake and then Raiden, who is an agent of the bad guys

In Sonic Adventure 2 you play as Eggman.

I guess in Starcraft you play as the Zerg.

Yakuza 0 kind of does this. Majima has chapters where he fights two of Kiryu's allies.
In Dicey Dungeons, if you defeat the Joker enough times, he turns against his leader and joins your party which makes him a playable character.

If it helps, I'm OP and I'll count AC3 even though it seems like it's pretty convoluted with how it fits the trope.

>I guess in Starcraft you play as the Zerg.

SC2 especially. Kerrigan antagonist of the Wings of Liberty campaign and the main character of the sequel

Can't name any off the top of my head cause it's easy to fail and hardly ever worth it, like tlou2.

You play the middle half of Chrono Cross as the villain, though it's a body swap so you're actually the protagonist in the villain's body. You do get his skills, elemental affinity, and fuckdoll though.

Do Dragon Ball games count?

how much can that dude lift?

Sure, so now that I think about it FighterZ's story modes definitely qualify.

Budokai 3's multiple stories would def count too, tho idk if I'd really count Tenkaichi's "you control the villain for the part of the fight where it seemed like they were winning, then switch to the hero when it gets turned around" bits, since if you're familiar with the anime those completely lack the twist element. I guess some of the What-Ifs might work but I can't remember any besides the Android 8 one.

Haven't played any of the post-PS2-era games besides FighterZ, so idk how any of those might handle it.

Star Wars The Force Unleashed, the first mission you play as Darth Vader and the rest of the game you are technically "the bad guy". You can also play as Darth Vader in Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3 in some missions. Heavy Rain also does this, but when it "happens" is controversial. Super Mario Odyssey and Super Paper Mario have segments where you play as Bowser. Most Tale Of games also do this in the fact that you wind up having strong "boss" enemies or villains join your party and you can control and play as them.

Nier: Automata

Heavy Rain

Devil May Cry 4 if you're retarded and somehow play that as your first game in the series

Fucking nice bro, God I wish that series wasn't dead

and yet you wish you would had played him for the rest of the game.

Breath of Fire IV

Thanks a ton, I didn't think to include "spinoff where you play as the bad guy", but those are definitely worth counting!

The best implementation of character switching is in the second half of nier automata. As the game gets closer to the end the switch interval gets faster and faster. It's fucking masterfully done.
