Hey guys, I am an expat from Zig Forums since it's pretty much all porn threads. I'm a collector and had been falling into the trap of never playing my games, so recently I have decided to actually sit down and play through my massive backlog.

I Got the jungle green DK64 N64 bundle for Xmas '99 along with Smash.

I have a really tumultuous relationship with OoT, I got it, along with a many other classics, within the next year or two, I think it was summer of 2000 I got OoT. I never beat it as a 8 year old, I only got to the point where you should be going into the forest as adult Link. In 2012, I got a 3DS, was working factory and got the 3DS version of the game. I remember being really into it, but financial troubles cut my playtime short as I had to sell the system and the game after just beating Bongo Bongo. So . . . as a 28 year old, I finally did it, and I would like to give you guys my perspective of the game. This will be broken down into a few posts, so bear with me . . .

Pictures always upload at wierd angles, even if it's vertical when I upload it. ANYHOW.

From seeing many reviews of this game on the internet, it seems to be harolded as the best game on the N64, and many reviews claim it's the single greatest game ever made, with many others ranking it in top 10 of all time position, my impressions . . . are a bit different.

To give you a quick shot before we go any further, no I do not think this is a bad game, my main, and only argument is that is should not be considered one of the greatest games of all time. A good game? Yes, best of all time? Not even close, and I would like to argue why I think that.

Nice blog, where do I subscribe?

jesus christ

n64 doesn't have any games so it's kind of a waste of time to start with that one, should have gotten anything else

Where to even begin? I am not a professional reviewer or anything, just some schmuck, so I may be all over the place, so keep that in mind.

My main issue with the game, is the game itself. Most of the time, I was very bored and was motivated to continue only because I wanted to see those pretty in game cut scenes and had the goal of finally beating the game after all these years. I will admit, my attention span is short, and while that may be a personal shortcoming, I also understand that not everything should be super simple easy mode everything handed to you, no difficulty, nothing to overcome, etc. but, I

found many of the game's dungeons to be a slog, and was just going through the motions and was thinking that I'd rather be playing almost any other game while playing at many points in the game. In my opinion, after the first three elemental dungeons, all of the dungeons after that are exceptionally boring, convoluted, and/or just plain frustrating depending upon what specific one we are talking about until the Shadow temple, which is towards the end of the game. Continued . . .

tl;dr

Nobody gives a fuck.

The main issue in these dungeons is that it boils down to the same handful of 10 or so activities remixed i every dungeon.

>Move a block to a spot
cool
>Light a torch
awesome
>Get hit by like 37 Keese in a small room
wowiee

The parts where you actually fight something like Wolfos or whatever are generally the best parts. I know that the game is by nature of being a Zelda game, very intertwined with puzzle elements, but my god, Shiggy didn't give us any variety in that regard.

If going into dungeons was, let's say, a third of the game, it would be ok, but the game progresses by having you from boring dungeon to boring dungeon to boring dungeon .and this is a crying shame, because I have A LOT of good things to say about this game as well, which I will get to in the next bit, but just this flaw marred the whole game IMO continued . . .

To my understanding, this game was slated to be developed on the N64 DD, then got moved over to just the base system after the release date was pushed back so much and it flopped, and I have to say, WOW, this game really makes me think the people developing the game were wizards, besides the admittedly sparse Hyrule Field, most of this game is jam packed with personally, stunning visuals, and personality on the for of its characters and the Zelda "universe." It was dusk in Gerudo Fortress, the guard opened the gate, and that shot of the gate opening to the desert with the sunset in your face just made think to myself "Anybody who thinks the N64looks bad, hasn't seen this." Of course there are many shitty looking N64 games, but not all the games have muddled graphics like the general consensus seems to be. Continued . . .

While playing this game, I felt as I was playing the video game embodiment of an epic, in the sense that I FELT like i hero I FELT I was doing something important (Even though the gameplay wasn't always congruent with this feeling) This game has so many minor details, and things I never even knew you could do until I read the Nintendo power guide. Yes I played with the actual guide and not just the internet, I wanted to capture the feeling of playing the game when it was current gen almost done . . .

Why does this ugly autist think anyone cares what he thinks?

In conclusion, I wish I could give this game a MUCH higher review score, but as it stands, I give the game a 7/10. I really do think that even though the game is, quite frankly, not very fun, I do think this a quality game, and a game every N64 owner should try out just because the story, and presentation are just so god damn good. I am glad that I decided to finally sit down and beat this game after so long, I more than likely WILL come back and revisit it, but it will not be for maybe another 10 or so years. Worth owning and playing, but I'm glad it's over.

Please let me know your guy's take on the game. I didn't come here just to rile everyone up, I just wanted to give my take on it.

I wanna know your guy's opinions on the game.

best game ever if you play it as a little kid aka every single nintendo game EVER made

Then open with that instead of telling us your life story, faggot

Well then . . .uhh . . . your opinion of the game?

NIGGER

boring 20fps gay elf game with shit combat, shit dungeons and the most generic story possible in a video game

My opinion is that OP is a faggot

Massively overrated. Fantastic for the time but there's nothing in the gameplay to really justify the craze. Much much better games exist that get completely overshadowed for no reason other than herdthink.

OoT was a game I skipped when it was new, since Majora's Mask was just that much more interesting to me
I finished it a couple of years ago, it really felt like been there, done that
Unlike Wind Waker and Link's Awakening, OoT rarely left a true impression on me
I appreciate how somber and sorrowful the game can be, from the death of the Deku Tree, to the decay of the kingdom and Link's unusual situation of losing his childhood and being forced to leave his home
Gameplaywise it's good, Link controls well and the games got a good pace, it's too easy and the dungeons are uninspired, but fit that era of gaming
I think the game wants to some sort of fantasy epic, but there isn't enough there because Link doesn't really have personality like in WW, Zelda's bland and Ganondorf's boring

I agree with the dungeons part of your opinion as it was my main complaint with the game, but not the others. Yeah the story is definitely not the most in depth thing on the planet, and there are a lot of open ended questions in the story, but I think that this is one of the best uses of time travel in a game, period. In regards to combat, are you judging it against todays standards, or in a vacuum? I think either way, the combat is a lot more in depth than you may think, although not having a second analog stick does heavily work against it. using the C button to look up and z targeting not always locking onto what you want are my two main complaints about combat, everything else is solid IMO. A good variety of sword swings dodges, magic, etc.

Probably one of the more grounded peopel in here. What do you suggest I play next? Besides the CDi games (lol) I have access to play everything on original hardware. Only other Zelda game I have beaten is BoTW, which I though was very good, albeit a bit overhyped (8/10) I was thinking about playing Oracle of Seasons, and I actually did have about an hour into the game about a week or so ago, and liked the charm so far.

>Yeah the story is definitely not the most in depth thing on the planet,
Depth has nothing to do with it, it's just a very safe story reliant on a few memorable moments. Majora's Mask was a correction, OoT was very safe in this regard.
>I think that this is one of the best uses of time travel in a game
It's self contradictory but time travel isn't really worth overthinking,
>are you judging it against todays standards, or in a vacuum
I play a lot of 5th gen games, and in comparison to other games from the time it's average. OoT works by constricting the player to a very limited set of moves and grounding them against their opponent. The lock on system it borrowed from Virtual On was implemented in Virtual On as a means to give more freedom in a 3D space, eliminating minor concerns like framing and target acquisition (OoT does this too) but instead of opening the gates with mechanics, dodges, move options, it instead limits you by design. It's a functional combat system but a very tame one. The few times where it seems like it's trying to branch out like with the shadow link fight, it turns out they didn't implement a proper attack timing system for the encounter so they just want you to use something like din's fire to cheese it.

get fucked reddit tranny.
I've been on Zig Forums since '06 and have hated niggers the entire time.
Before Zig Forums /new/ was the best board.

I'm really glad you mentioned Virtual on, I am a huge gen 5 gen 6 guy, and I have recently been on a bit of a Sega journey outside of playing my usual Nintendo stuff lately. I have the four main NA consoles, and plan on getting Everdrives for them. I was really drawn to the Saturn games, admittedly, because of the cool long boxes and the public's perception of it being an obscure system (including mine at the time) I bought PD1 and 2 along with SFA2 and Sega Rally, and Oh man, the Saturn is fucking awesome man. I really dont have too much experience with the SMS, Genesis, or the DC, but I can tell you I was drawn to it because the games graphics look like every arcade I had at my local Chuck E Cheeze ripoff place, and that's a good thing because I'm nostalgic for that look. I really like the way early 3D games look, and don't get the hate for that aesthetic. It's odd, when the DC came out, I didn't evem know, and I was 7 so I would have been old enough to remember but didnt see a DC until 2002. I thought Sega was just an arcade manufacturer of my my favorite arcade games until I was a DC.

saw a DC*

Get medical help

Already have my endoscopy monitor for my games, but thank you for the concern :)

As an adult I value those arcade style games Sega specialized in much more than lengthier games like Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time. Those two lack replayability and the good parts are spread out so far that it becomes a chore to actually play it. In the time it takes me to get to something like tick tock clock I could have completed half a dozen games on the Saturn, and be eager to play them again.

It wasn't hard to see what Nintendo games were for, and it wasn't for people to enjoy playing them but to keep them playing as long as possible.

Well I think honestly it's a bit more nuanced than that. I think you are implying that Nintendo games are comprised of mostly filler, which, let's be honest, every single video game company is guilty of producing games like that. I don't get the vibe that Nintendo were trying to pad out their games, it was just the zeitgeist that people were expecting longer games, and RPGs and Collectathons were the name of the game. I will concede that Sega games have the Sega arcade DNA, which, like you said, typically means all killer and no filler, but that is a double edged sword. When you are dropping a bunch of cash, the consumer typically wants to feel like their purchase was justified, and typically that means having games be longer than 2 hours most of the time. While games like Panzer Dragoon are the epitome of all killer and no filler, and there were quite a few Sega games like this (Daytona, is a good example) I think Nintendo just has more consistently quality IPs, which , sometimes they turn out to be an Ocarina of Time, not bad, just not amazing, but not many people will outright say it's a bad game. I do appreciate Sega's zaniness and willingness to throw 900 things at the wall and see what sticks, but for every Nights into dreams, there were like 3 "uhhh WTF Sega???" games. While not necessarily bad, and many decent one offs, I think not having as broad of a consistent quality IP base is partially what led to Sega's demise. Well, that and the 32x and other questionable hardware based decisions.
