I literally cannot understand a RE4 remake. I get it with RE2 and RE3 because you change the mechanics from fixed camera to OTS, but what are you going to add to RE4 that isn't just some updated graphics?
If any game really needs a remake it's RE1 with OTS and to make the mansion three times as big

I don't mind if they do this. It's not as if the original is disappearing or anything.
The island did feel off but I would like them actually improve it and not just cut it out.
The weapon upgrade system does need to be improved. Mix it up with buying from the merch and also finding upgrades.
I do want the town to be more open world-ish

I would only be OK with getting rid of the island if it expanded the village portion. However, companies/devs that remake games don't take such large risks.
RE4 has tank controls in an OTS perspective. I rather they remove them and make the game more like RE2 remake

The island is great. God damn babies. It's when shit hits the fan gameplay-wise. Everything you learned in your journey gets applied and comes at you full-force.
Also it has one of the very best laboratory settings of the entire franchise. This mf says hello on the island.
The only thing I'd reconsider are the context of the enemies. Minigun zombies I wasn't a fan of, but 90% of it is great.
Back in the day the game was entirely sold on JUST the woodland stuff. There was an assumption in the media it was an open world game before that became a meme with a texas chainsaw inspired vibe.
Then you get fucking dragon cannons hanging from chains above a lava lake you ride a platform over like fucking bowsers castle.

Every time someone says cut the island someone automatically says "but regenerators tho" like they can't be introduced anywhere else. Its the WW2 ruins and minigun shit that blows. that shit is the moment the franchise turned to shit for a long ass time.

That sounds great. For an extra unpopular opinion, make the village part larger and OPEN WORLD. Then conclude with a smaller castle and the creepy Plagas mines beneath it. Bitores Mendez is the main villain the whole time.
I'd play it if they cut the island and all the goofy shit, including the roundhouse kick, and upped the horror. I don't care that it would mess with what people like about the game the most.
combine the mines with the lab and make it where the nemesis parasite from 3make came from. End with the whole village being a bastard offshoot of the 'totally not the spencer family homeland' of RE8.
The Castle should become a RE1 mansion-esque massive interconnected level where you search for the chimera heads with minimal direction, with most of it being optional.
And no, the island stays. I want to see how much they can tune up the Regenerator spookiness.
