Very few franchises actually get better with subsequent releases after reaching a certain point. Those that do are exceptions to the rule. Almost every franchise with 6+ releases has a game that's widely considered the best of the franchise somewhere between the third release up to the half-way mark. Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, or any other long-running franchise.

You might find the first season is a little harder to watch than the second, so maybe start there if it's not clicking for you.
