You'd probably feel different about it if most games, especially the big iconic ones, only had black women as their characters. Zelda? Black Woman. Mario? Black Woman. Megaman? Black robo-woman, etc. It would feel weird. I don't think it's necessarily about self-inserting. I personally don't give a shit about representation one way or the other as I'll make characters of any gender and skintone so more options is always better than less.

Representation doesn't really matter as it doesn't directly contribute to the gameplay or overall experience of the game, a playable white dude wouldn't change anything about a game like Guacamelee.

People typically want a character who resembles them in some fashion because it's easier for them to relate to, nothing wrong with that. It's the reason why a lot of older game protagonists are silent and have no personality, so that you can self insert easier.

It's different to race swap than it is to just make their own things, which I think most people are fine with.
