While I hate tourneyfags, I acknowledge their right to play the game with whatever retarded rulesets they want, in the way they want.
Companies can fuck off. Imagine if FIFA could just go to your local school district and and take all soccer balls and shut down any video footage because it's from a "non-sanctioned tournament".

The main sticking point seems to be Slippi, as it requires a very specific version of Melee, making it completely unrealistic to expect that all participants own a physical copy of that specific version AND to have dumped it themselves. You'd probably be able to "Free Melee" yourselves if you instead opted in to just using regular Dolphin Netlplay with any version, or even Parsec. If MvC3fags can both stand to use the former for money matches and get away without the legal ire of The Mouse, then it should be more than fair for Melee.

Nintendo is being Disney-tier with how they're shutting down grassroots tournaments. There's probably a handful of japanese businessmen with a stick up their ass so far, that they think having an old game like Melee would ruin Nintendo's/Smash Bros. Melee's brand.
But they can get away with it. Wanna know why? Because the competitive Smash scene is a blip compared to the many, many kids/teens/adults/manchildren who buy their shit year-after-year. And Ninty knows this

This also applies to Ultimate, since Nintendo doesn't even have to entertain any criticism of the game. It, just like the previous 4 titles, printed money for them. So things like terrible netcode and bad buffering system can get swept under the rug.

The mod just added online play so they can play it without coofing on each other. Balance is unchanged.

Normally I'd be against this kind of thing but I really hope Nintendo takes this opportunity to crack down further and delete the melee scene for good.

I know this may sound crazy but have you considered simply not playing Super Smash Brothers Melee?

REMINDER THAT IN THE UNITED STATES:

- Emulators are legal (as per Bleem vs Sony)

- Roms (archival copies) are legal for you to own and use, as long as you own the game and as long as you rip the rom yourself. (as per the US Copyright Act, Section 117)
All you need to rip GC roms yourself is a hacked Wii. It's NOT hard.

- Game modifications are legal (as per Galoob vs Nintendo)

Nintendo would prefer that you not know this information, as no amount of sad Mario pictures and posturing from them will make it true. All they can do is throw lawyers and money around in a Schezwan sauce tantrum to try and get people to do what they want.
