PS2 could act as a DVD player. Also, Sony had already established itself as a strong player in the video game industry, whereas Microsoft still had to make its mark. It did pay off eventually with the 360, but it just took a while.

piracy wasn't even that widespread until after the release of the PS3, up until then it was limited to finicky modchips and burnt media. the xbox on the other hand had terrible security measures that kept getting circumvented, and considering it was basically a windows box, ripping and distributing games was easy. the only limiting factor was the shit network speeds back then, but Xecutor has been a thing since 2003
none of this matters though because the xbox didn't have games. PS2 was better in every regard when it came to the sheer fucking variety of titles available for it, not to mention it was cheaper than most DVD players at the time, so you basically bought a DVD player that could also play games for free. MS didnt have a chance desu
