Metroid does indeed have 2d shooting and platforming, but combat and platforming are not the focus. The focus is finding your way through an ever expanding labyrinth by finding new abilities to progress.

OP I'm getting mixed signals from you here. You don't want a platformer of any kind but you ALSO want it to be "edgy" (Whatever that's supposed to mean), despite the fact that 80% of the NES and SNES library is precisely the platforming shit that you want to avoid. When you say edgy like Sonic, do you mean a middle ground that is more mature than Mario/Kirby but not as mature as Metroid? Or do you just straight up mean mature mature. Because Nintendo only has like 3 of those and they're all dead. Like I said, you can go with Mother, or F-Zero, and Metroid (But it has platforming so oh noes).

Most mature Nintendo game i can maybe think of is Majora or Xenoblade 1, but that's post-snes

Go with the GBA remake of the first game, the NES game really kinda sucks. . From there, you could go AM2R for the second game, then emulate Super Metroid.
Or you could just skip to Super Metroid like a chad

Zero Mission, but it's not the NES game in any way except replacing it in the canon. It plays completely differently

So you grow a pair and play it, after Zelda 2 it's the hardest game nintendo published.
