Please do not let my thread go to waste

Paper Mario threads only draw (you)'s when a new game comes out and we all collectively shit on it.
That said, combat in M&L is better, but I still prefer the PM games.

Mario and Luigi RPG perfected the combat.

Mario and Luigi built on the idea of action commands and took it to new heights but Paper Mario always had way deeper customization options up until they ruined the series.

Do you folks think M&LRPG series is dead now that Alpha Dream went under?

yeah this
it's a shame both series are fucked beyond belief now though
rip mario RPGs

seriously. if they're not gonna bring back either series, i hope they at least make a completely new series with bits that reference the old ones

They will probably make Paper Mario an RPG series again now that Mario and Luigi is probably done. I'm pretty sure they changed Paper Mario to avoid being redundant. They should have stuck with the ARPG style of SPM instead of making turn based Kings Quest though.

SMRPG >

Bowser's Inside Story-style badge system sucks dick, and I hate it. SSS was pretty bland, and I don't remember PiT badges at all.

What do you think, I imagine Nintendo won't revive it because of the sales, it'd take a miracle for it to somehow poof a team for a new game. Such a shame we never got a game for switch

Paper Mario does skills better, M&L does everything else better. And for the spoiler I'd give a similar answer, BP is changed so it works like SP and FP is integrated into M&L. Bros. Moves can't be spammed anymore while FP allows the typical badge skills from Paper Mario to be done

it's extremely basic, pretty much just a FF game with a mario skin, the team that made the game went on to make the M&L games which expanded on just about every mechanic in the game
I really don't get the nostalgia wankery, the platforming in particular was horrible

Nah. Tanabe hates RPGs. Until that guy fucks off Paper Mario will never recover.

He infiltrated the IP as far back as SPM and planted this seed in Kawade that RPGs are bad m'kay.

The virgin M&L
>no tactics required beyond "hit enemies and heal when low on HP"
>on level up, all stats go up and you choose one to boost by a tiny bit
>equip whatever has the highest stats
>can carry 99 of every healing item

The chad Paper Mario
>many factors affect tactics, such as enemy positioning, active partner, badges equipped, HP, FP, Star Energy, etc.
>minmax stats to the fullest possible extent
>complex badge system allowing for many different setups
>carefully choose 10 items to bring

i generally prefer paper mario's combat but I love the ability to avoid all damage in M&L without it being completely overpowered if you're good at it like with superguarding in ttyd

I'd say Mario & Luigi because they feel more engaging but a fusion of the two (that isn't shit like Paper Jam) would be best. Paper Mario's badge/build system is way better than M&L's and its partner system would be cool if applied with mainstay characters like Wario, Rosalina, Daisy, and Waluigi that normally don't get their time in the sun, because M&L would probably go for that as opposed to PM styled OCs. M&L's team attack/special moves are better and its counterattack system is more engaging

Do we know what happened with AlphaDream's employees? Did Nintendo absorb them into another/their own studio or did they just tell em to fuck off?

do either of the series have games that arent piss easy? dont get me wrong, they're still fun, but it'd be nicer if i had to worry about losing

Dream Team is the only Mario RPG with a Hard Mode (granted, you have to unlock it). Bosses in that game hit like trucks too, and has a tough optional boss rush.

No official ones come to mind but this rom hack might be what you're looking for youtube.com/watch?v=dxr5B0qZ8i0

I remember Superstar Saga's final boss being unusually difficult.

Every attack is basically a random minigame
Every characters minigames are different
Marios are based on retro mario games
Luigis minigames are based on modern mario games
Warios are based on warioware
Waluigis are based on Sports

Paper Mario has the most entertaining turn-based combat of any jrpg

/thread

Superstar’s counter system alone puts it miles ahead Paper Mario

Paper Mario since Sticker Star has no combat.

M&L is great and so was classic Paper Mario. I prefer M&L but they both offer that awesome level of skill where if you're good enough you take less or no damage. Super fun turn based rpgs. We don't talk about SS or anything after. It's a shame Nintendo let M&L die so Nu-Paper Mario could desecrate it's corpse.

You could counter in TTYD -- it was a really tight window with the B button instead of A.

Not him but I just like the way the game is more then the newer ones. I like the character designs, I like the maps and the platforming doesn't bother me too much. The world in general I find more appealing.

You could, but it wasn’t as expanded as it was in Superstar, leading to really interesting interactions with enemies that make them feel way more alive and expressive.

I always hated the combat in M&L. It's much too demanding and every turn becomes a tedious minigame. It would be fantastic in an action game, but not a turn-based RPG.

The timed hits being hidden and different for every piece of equipment gives it a fun layer of interactivity on the tried and true FF formula. The game works great and it being a more traditional RPG is hardly a negative quality.

Mario & Luigi after the second one feels like a fucking minigame collection with a story mode. Battles take an eternity due to the snowballing bros items system and there's zero player expression in combat. I gave up on it an hour into the fourth one, it feels like a game for people who hate RPGs and need to be distracted from the basic gameplay.
