I think the writers failed to create Trevor's character. At times he looks like a psychopath, at other times he is clearly able to empathize and have a sense of justice (albeit insane). The guys didn't decide if they were going to create a psychopath or a guy who could empathize, but insane.

I feel like Trevor is judged by people who only played the main missions and never did any secondary missions or hang out with him. He's actually pretty chill and human there.
