The devs were willing to risk their reputation amongst a significant portion of their fanbase, and released a game they knew would divide it in two, because they were so dedicated to the story they wanted to tell. How many video games can you honestly say that about?

The fact that I only ever see Pathologic mentioned in opposition to TLOU2, rather than on its own merits, discourages me from playing it. That and the fact that it looks like a clunky impenetrable mid-budget Russian game that I've never heard of outside Zig Forums.

Most devs that aren't triple A make the games they want to make. Silent Hill 2 was a massive departure from the first in terms of focus of the story and overall tone. Last of Us was a glorified Netflix miniseries.
