Game Cube was the only Nintendo Console I skipped, so Melee is the only one I never owned and thus played the least of, so maybe I am missing something but why is held up so much?
I don't recall it being special at all, in fact I recall at the time thinking all the new stagers were worse than the original and most the new characters being lame.
Why is Melee the gold standard for these people?

As a fan of Puyo Puyo, I despise calling Puyo fans Chigyus, but if you support Melee, the community who shits on us for liking newer Smashes due to more content, you deserve to be called a Chigyu.

Tighter physics and more technical gameplay than later Smash Bros entries

Wasn't most of those 'more technical gameplay' techniques just exploiting unintended glitches in the mechanics like wave dashing?
If I recall, at the time the only 'competitive play' required you to only be able to use one or two character out of the entire roster.
Seems like it's just a bunch of people who became too used to an exploit they can no longer move on from.

It's fucking jank as all hell but you would never get that impression from how the Meleefags genuinely act like it's a flawless game mechanically. I started with Melee and I have absolutely no idea how anyone can say that it's easy going back to Melee once you've played the likes of Ultimate. They totally undersell how aged the game has become in 2020.

Nobody does, that game is full of sex jokes and clearly not intended for children.

You're thinking about it all wrong. Rosterfags will never understand why Melee is seen as superior. The conservation of momentum during jumps is natural and feels good to the player. That and it has a bunch of movement options that got removed from the following installments greatly reduced the depth of the gameplay. Not to mention that the game was followed by Brawl, which was intentionally fucked as much as possible to reduce the skill cieling. I think I need only to mention tripping to demonstrate how bad it was. Ultimate does a lot if things better, some things worse, but I believe that it would have easily replaced Melee if Brawl hadn't come out and built this undying attachment to Melee.

Not him, but it was mostly left in because of time restraints. I think I read some interview they didn't have time to fix some stuff they tested, including the wave dashing, so they left it in. Mostly because he didn't think it would damage the game. Which it didn't. It added another level of gameplay.

Was a poor highschool kid so wasn't up to me, once was out of school and had a job I got a Wii which was backwards compatible so I played all the old games I misses, but by that time Brawl was out so there seemed to be no need for Melee.
