It's just incredibly taxing, which will be fixed over time until cards are good enough to handle it. Saying ray tracing is a fad in 2020 is like saying ambient occlusion is a fad in 2007 with Crysis; the 3080 will pretty much be primitive in the next 5-8 years compared to the cards of the future. 7 years ago was the 780, which could barely run Call of Duty: Black Ops II, an Xbox 360 game, at 1440p 60 FPS.

Raytracing allows developers to produce the exact same lighting setups they have been doing this whole time, but faster and with proper reflections... but also causing unplayable framerates. Artifacting upscalers are not comparable to native resolution, proper native res raytracing will be a thing 10-15 years from now.

Just wait for next year's GPUs or the year after that.
