I finally got around to starting to play disgaea 4, and so far I have to say, I'm not very fond of the main character

4's story only get worse as it goes on. There is a love interest but she is about as interesting as watching paint dry.

Generics are completely fine to go through the game with and in some ways are better as some of the side story modes restrict which main characters you can use.

Its main use is to place symbols that promote something with the units inside. You'll get more of these places unlocked as you progress through the game and pass the bill at the assembly. Basically you want to put the symbols in a way that some units can take advantage of two depending on what you are interested in while others may be something you have one unit it and ignore.
