i like it

Makes DOOM 2016 look dated and pretty much shits all over it in every way. Losing Mick Gordon for future DOOM games is pretty shit. I hope they can sort something out. Andrew Hulshult's music isn't bad but it just doesn't have the same level of production that Mick brought to the game.

Yeah I'd have to agree on that one too, going back to Doom 2016 feels nauseating. The direction the story is going is a bit corny but everything else is very original and overall a blast.

It's just one circular arena after another....why the fuck do you have all that freedom of movement if the level design is like that ??

Doom isn't safe from capitalism

Can a franchise have two distinct gameplay styles that are both acknowledged as good.
It's only reasonable to have a preferred style for every person, but every discussion where a franchise has either a spinoff series or sequel with different gameplay almost always devolves into pointless shitflinging, mainly because you can't make an actual worthwhile argument about how a certain style of gameplay is better or worse than another.
i.e. traditional metroid vs metroid prime

I love both old school doom and the new shit they've come up with for eternal.

I'm not making another goddamn account on another fucking website its out of fucking principle at this point its bad enough i have to use steam, also FUCK YOU FAT OBESE PIECE OF SHIT

For the most part it is a strict upgrade but its higher difficulty will cause many players to actually be less creative than they might've been at the end of Doom 2016. That's the conundrum it has to deal with. Rather than not really thinking about stepping out of their comfort zone, they're instead outright afraid of stepping out of the comfort zone. If they actually take the time to git gud it blows Doom 2016 out of the water but I can see how some people just didn't like it as much. I think they're wrong on a fairly objective level that the game discourages constantly reevaluating your game plan, but some people are inevitably going to slip through the cracks of what the developers called the fun zone.

I will say that gating weapon upgrades seems kind of pointless to me. I understand why they hold off on dumping all the mods on you of course, but those 15-30% buffs to weapons should just be there from the start. "Trudge through with the shittier mod until you can upgrade it in order to have fun" seems like a bad call.

When the game is at a high point, it's pretty high. But moment to moment it's the worst doom game, yes worse than 3. It's like they took the criticisms of doom 2016 and "solved" them in all the wrong ways.

You work at id software, because you made enemies poop health and ammo everyone is just using two guns and never changing things up. Do you

A. Make the sequel more like the classic games where SOME semblance of ammo management actually matters, forcing you to actually think about your level design and how you place ammo and health.

Or

B. LMAO just make them unable to carry jack shit.

APM by itself doesn't make a game fun.

Just pirate it bro

i pirated it and still had to use an account

This is a very accurate assessment. My first playthrough of the game was very true to this, I'd stuck to Ballista + SSG + Rockets for most of the game then on my 2nd and 3rd playthrough I began trying different strategies like the Microwave beam and Remote Detonation.

Overall, if you're willing to put a few hours into the game you'll probably find it a much more fulfilling experience to 2016. The chaingun is way better in Eternal as well.

What about Doom 3?
It could probably go with a team that gives a shit and could fix its problems and respect that formula.

It's okay, but the original games are better since they have actual level design and not endless copy paste arenas. Also I fucking hate the over dramatic plot they've shat out and forced into the game.
I like the combat but I have to be in the mood to play it. I can load up classic Doom whenever and have fun but Eternal I actually need to feel it before playing. Also, some Doom 2 wads have pulled the "combat puzzle" thing better than Eternal ever could by forcing you to think your way around difficult or temporarily unkillable opponents mid battle, like most of the early sections of Ancient Aliens.
Finally, some meta criticism: The fanbase get too angry when they see someone actually criticising the game. As in far more than you'd normally see, but I guess tougher games attract those kinds of people.

I wish they just made it like classic Doom but with the Eternal models. Eternal is okay but It's barely a Doom game anymore, and its obsession with difficulty has attracted some serious douchebags into the series community. At least they stay away from the originals because of the "bad graphics" though.

Absolutely. I remember liking Doom 3 to, maybe not as much as the others but it was still fun.
I always felt it was similar to Half Life 2, but faster and with smaller map design that made the fast movement more critical to not dying. A new developer could take that basic formula and run miles with it.

>build game to be a combat puzzle
>nuke ammo count
>tease infighting when you enter a room, but doesn't actually let you use infighting to your advantage

It's like even when classic design options are staring them right in the face, the devs do everything they can to not use them.

Very fun game that gets you into the zone and rewards gitting gud

I Like the gameplay.
I don't like the lore.

>B. LMAO just make them unable to carry jack shit.
It might've gone somewhere if the chainsaw didn't just hook you up with all the ammo you're missing and didn't always recharge a pip for fodder that also consistently respawns.

zoom zoom you have NEON GUTS! I WOULD LIKE TO GLORY KILL AND RIP OUT YOUR CONFETTI GUTS EVERY OTHER MOB FOR A SLIVER OF AMMO! GLORY KILL GOOD ZOOM ZOOM!

Its Doom if they made it into a character action game. Most complaints ive seen seem to stem from old fans unable to cope with this fact trying to say its "not muh Doom" some others have valid gameplay criticisms that dont actually take away from the experience. Its a great game, only try hards "hate" it.

I dont understand this complaint about the fun zone. I dont use the same tactics over and over, I played the entire game without using the freeze gernade for example. I always use all the different guns and the only repetetive thing I dont like is constantly using the chainsaw I guess.

It's very fun when you're in the zone of combat, constantly switching weapons to suit whichever enemy you're fighting.
Weak points on enemies was a good touch, though some enemies are trivialized by this (Mancubus mainly)
Cheats are great. I remember wanting a perma-haste in 2016 and it was cool to see it added in.
I understand complaints against ammo management with the chainsaw, but I didn't usually mind since it was a small portion of what I was doing in combat.

Bosses fucking suck compared to 2016 though. The Gladiator was the only ok one.
OST also felt less cathartic than 2016

Yeup. You won’t find many shooters like it but you also won’t find much of what you get out of the other shooters in it, much like God of War to Zelda.

Being forced to do very specific things in very specific ways doesn't suddenly become fun just because you're doing it at high speeds. This game is baby's first flow state.

I like it well enough, but I fucking suck and can't seem to git gud no matter what I try and then get frustrated/depressed over failing constantly, so I just load up classic Doom to make myself feel better.

Try what I did, dont take your finger off the W key first for a while, try running around for a minute, then start prioritizing and shooting second. Youll start to see how nothing can really hit you if you dont stop.

2016 was better, but I'm beginning to understand that it can't really be repeated.

Art design in 2016 was largely horror-inspired, and the level elements, if altered for a different genre, would work well in a survival horror type game. 2016 worked well because it juxtaposed these horror elements with well executed power fantasy action gameplay.

Imagine the last game that terrified you, but in the moment of fear you charged the monster and ripped it's head off. Doom 2016 lived off this.

Eternal discarded it's horror elements for extra power fantasy. It's game-play is great, but ironically, without the horror juxtaposition, it doesn't feel as empowering

It was on sale for like 29$ for the deluxe pack so I picked it up. It's pretty fun so far but all the little gadgets dont feel very doom. They're neat and all, but I find myself not even using them. Kinda sucks because the game is clearly designed around their use at the higher difficulties. What exactly did I miss between doom 2016 and eternal by the way? At the end of 2016 didnt Hayden trap doomguy or something? Where the fuck did he get the rad space ship and s copy of vega?

Since the majority of the fights take place in large arenas, I use the strategy of moving around the arena in a loop. It keeps the demons moving to catch you, and not attacking you or doing anything else.

>tease infighting when you enter a room, but doesn't actually let you use infighting to your advantage
This is the thing that pisses me off the most, I'm ok w/ doom eternal, If I had money I'd buy it for 20 bux during one of steam's sales, but those light tactics thru infighting are deeply missed.

Mick Gordon is so bland, why do people like him?

Combat and enemy variety wise they are going in a great direction but need to tighten up the animations and execution. If you want the game to reflect skill having things like chainsaws missing, teleporting enemies when animations glitch, and hit detection being this shoddy is just embarrassing.

Also get rid of all the weapon/rune/armor unlocks, they just bloat the game with all the currencies going around. Older games did this better by allowing you to find guns earlier or taking away certain guns at the start of a level. This incentivized exploration without giving you a bunch of needless progression mechanics. Also allows for interesting enemy encounters by restricting playing tools.

No one really knows how Doomguy escaped the trap Hayden made for him or where the space ship is from. It's a common complaint of the game.

He did however backup VEGA on the second to last level of doom 2016, as shown.

doesnt really feel like doom (nor does 2016).

It kind of paints the demons as stupider. Like sure, chaingun me on accident in the middle of a fight and I’ll get pissed off but these idiots are going at it before you even get there.

This. From a gameplay stand point Eternal shits on 2016 from so high up it's not even funny, the music is just really disappointing though.

It actually is possible to do, just more difficult to pull off than the originals
