When did 2d platformers peak?
When did 2d platformers peak?
Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES
Sonic 2
It's one of those genres that was pretty much perfected decades ago during the 16 bit era. Not much has changed with them when an actually new one is made. Sonic Mania could have been done on the genesis for instance, just on a lower fidelity. It feels as if all of the experimentation and gameplay advancements of 2d platformers ended in the 90s. So I would say they peaked during that era.

Super mario world is superior in every way
Celeste.
It is a game about literally climbing a peak but it is actually a metaphor for the struggles of being transexual
Good counter argument.
This post got me thinking. Can you come up with a platform mechanic not done before? Examples of existing ones:
>platform falls/crumbles when you touch it
>platform starts moving when you touch it
>platform moves and you slide away and have to move with it
>platform appears and disappears periodically
>platform appears or disappears when you press the jump button
I took them all from mario, may be present in other games
mario 3.
FACT: Both ori games btfo all these shitty retro platformers.
This. Worldfags only exist because it was their first Mario game
Probably SNES with MMX.
PS1 and further MMX games feel like shit to play compared to the first 3.
X2 > X1

SMB 3 was the peak
Yoshi's Island was the swan song

New Rayman and DK Tropical Freeze were both phenomenal
2D platformers are still peaking, just less room for innovation.
I want a good 2.5D platformer though
>a fat Italian plumber jumping on turtles to save a retarded princess who gets purposely kidnapped and raped by bowser is the pinnacle of gaming
>implying 2d platformer = pinnacle of gaming
lmao
Not a a criticism of the gameplay.
DKC2 was perfection.
Rayman Legends and DKC Tropical Freeze are the best 2D platformers of the 21st century and will never be topped.
