Phil Spencer said they don't see Sony as a rival or worth competing against, but they're clearly sweating about it seeing how low the priced their new consoles and forced Sony to price PS5 the same as Series X. I do get that MS has introduced a lot of cancerous shit to the industry with paid DLC, paid online and they tried to remove game ownership with the xbone but gladly that shit didn't fly. Still competition is needed to keep things somewhat customer friendly but I'd much rather have Sega being the one Sony is going against in the console market.

ps2 and 3 were behind the curve significantly. it wasnt that they wanted it to be free, they intended to make a single player console. essentially a final fantasy box. I remember this being talked about while playing on Quarry in Mw2. Because of this difference of focus created different communities during the ps3 era when online multiplayer started to become a big deal. Youtubers would play on sony consoles because it was loaded with casuals that didnt have a mic, so also couldnt communicate as a team. Free online, so you get a different kind of player.

This is going to happen because of European consumer protection litigation. Now that you can refund digital games, they're pushing for the option to resell digital licenses. Once that happens, people can dump keys for prices that undercut even the steepest if holiday sales and publishers will just move to a subscription model.
