Are gaming pcs becoming more irrelevant?
the difference between a gaming pc and normal pc is the parts available. you can't get the gpus for love nor money. if gaming stopped, you would still have pcs. when consoles stop, you'll still have pcs.
They have been since around the 90s. The vast majority of games on PC are console ports or indie shovelware. You can get the best visuals of those games out of a PC, but rarely is anything built from the ground up with a maxed out gaming rig as the target audience anymore. If you want to get into VR, PC is good though because PSVR is held back by the god awful controllers. If the PSVR2 rumors are true though, PC isn't even gonna be the best place for VR in the future.
Yeah, the OP clearly isn't arguing if PCs are irrelevant, he was asking if gaming PCs are irrelevant.
Is a PC built around the core concept of being a machine to play the current gen of games maxed out really necessary for gaming these days? With current consoles getting 60 fps and HD graphics, similar loading times, and comparable results across the board, could it be argued that making a gaming PC is kinda dumb?
>could it be argued that making a gaming PC is kinda dumb?
i'd argue no, because it's just another way to consume media. it's like arguing modding your car is irrelevant because you can buy a pre-made ready to go car. different strokes and all that.
Fucking retard frogposter.
yes
console:
>best games come out first
>gets any relevant pc games right away
>comfy couch gaming on big screen TV

pc
>all console exclusives come out a year+ later on pc
>add additional 6+ months for the games to get cracked because piracy is rampant on pc
>when games do get ported to pc they are released at a full price tag, meanwhile console version can be had at 50-75% discounts by that time
>requires a table
>requires a $2000 office chair from herman miller (unless you want to end up getting back surgery down the line) (better hope for that 15% discount lmao)
>requires a monitor that even at 1440p is tiny relative to a 40" TV, and it can't even be used to watch shit on like movies with your family/friends on a comfy couch
>still needs a controller to play majority of games since they were designed for it
>no physical games, must install millions of launchers (Steam, Origin, Uplay, Battle.Net, EGS, Bethesda Launcher, GoG Galaxy) to play games
>cancer 1-year exclusives introduced by EGS
>free online play with hacking russians and brazillians with 200+ms latency
>better graphix (make sure to install the latest drivers!)
>more fps (on low-medium settings, also might need to rollback to older drivers)
>exclusive RTS, MMO, indies, MOBAs, BR, early access genres
>can emulate console games from 2006 (that run at barely 60fps)
>can mod titties and ass into Fallout 3/4 and Skyrm!
>RGB lights!
>can replace hardware at will because you gonna need to
>mouse and keyboard for dem Excel spreadsheets
>can play boomer doom 1 and 2 with custom wads
>bigger than any average console
What was the last high profile pc game? Doom 3? Half Life 2? Maybe Crysis? It hasn't been relevant in 15 years.
Yup, everyone's gaming on a ps5 now.
Depends on the games you’re interested in.
Apple shifting to ARM has some interesting implications for the industry though.
Half Life:Alyx
>gets all 3rd party games
>all xbox exclusives
>some PS exclusives (with Sony expressing interest to port more)
>emulates some Switch already
>emulates most 7th gen exclusives and previous generation emulation is nearly perfect
>no gens exist on the platform, you can easily and cheeply play games from the 90s and yesterday's releases
>has genres that are exclusive to it
>has actual backwards compatibility
>can do more than just game
>dont have to pay for my own internet
>modding is free and abundant
>still has active communities in older games
>huge player base
>multiple storefronts ensure the best of deals
>Steam actually has good download speeds, remote play, machine learning recommendations, reviews, communities, workshop, doesn't censor games like some pink haired fuck in Sony's San Franciso location does and more all for FREE
>DLSS 2.0 ensures GPUs will last longer than they ever have before
>raytracing is already BTFO on consoles
>4k gaming will be a breeze
>THE POWER OF THE SSD already debunked by gameplay videos
AHAHAHAHAHAH CONSOLE FAGGOTS
>in b4 IT'S PRICEY as he uses his $1,000 phone and $1,000 MacBook to respond to this post
>IT'S PRICEY as he spends $60 a year to use his own internet
>IT'S PRICEY as he refuses to believe you can build a PC for far less than what you'll spend on a console in its lifetime
>IT'S PRICEY as he has separate devices for work, school, and gaming
>IT'S PRICEY as he pays $60 a pop for releases ($60 for the inevitable remake in a few years) and misses out on copious amount of sales from multiple storefronts
>IT'S PRICEY as he is not an adult and the thought of investing in what is most likely his main hobby is foreign to him
face it, this is a PC generation
Probably PUBG
nice bait
>snoys have to project this hard
yeah, as usual
I'd argue getting a gimped, restricted PC that has generational lock, paid online, $70 games, no mods, emulation or any of the features offered by a gaming PC is kind of dumb
Pretty much, yeah. I think the age of PC games being made to push current tech boundaries is over for pretty obvious reasons. It’s far more profitable to make games that can run on pretty much everything.
consoles need to pay devs so they make exclusives to stay relevant
pcs are just good and with backward compatibility that goes 40 years, even with consoles
it's a no contest
It wasn't supposed to be this way.
PC gaming in concept should outperform and outlast everything but it is plagued with:
- shit games since development for the platform is easy.
- gamers have to compete with crypto-miners for good processors.
- pc game market has a shit ton of half-assed games, money sinks, every degenerate and predatory thing. It's turning into a backwater.
With consoles, the quality tends to be much better. Still shit, but in a different kinda of way that's far more tame than the shit pc gamers have to deal with.
it's clear the consoles are entering the last years of their life. with pc hardware already surpassing the new consoles before they were even out, the cost and logistics of fitting even higher performing and higher heat-generating cpus/gpus in the future doesn't bode well for a cost effective, traditional console system. future consoles, if using future pc hardware, will be the same size as a small pc (ps5 already matches a small pc atx tower) and will be a pc in everything but name.
You say that but think about it for a second. PC truly only achieved parity with consoles within this most recent generation. Look back to the PS360 era and there were plenty of big games that either came very late to Windows or not at all.
Games are now easier to run on pc, even an office pc can do it. Gaming pcs, aka high end gear isn't required anymore just to play games so yeah I guess you can say that gaming pcs are becoming irrelevant.
No you dumb console faggot, the concept behind it is freendom, which also means niche things you don't like, outperforming is just a part of its freedom.
if pc gaming was irrelevant publishers wouldn't be releasing games on it. even sony is releasing more games on it which goes against it being irrelevant.
You’re posting with teenagers, don’t bother.
The funniest thing about P5 is that if it didn't have the stroke of luck of getting an out of ordinary BC with a mediocre console like P4 it would have been nothing more than a completely useless plastic box. And according to console fags a console in such a pitiful state is better than a PC.
Wouldn’t bet on this being the case forever. These consoles aren’t as underpowered at release as the last ones. PC space is also looking at some severe fragmentation with the shift to ARM.
I’m not really a /g/ guy but my understanding is that consoles still use custom hardware configurations even if they’re getting closer to off the shelf PC parts.
custom only refers to different package/io and board sizes/layouts compared to atx standards for pcs. nothing more. the days of truly "custom" exotic hardware is no more.
Yeah. Normally I try to keep in mind that there are probably thousands of Zig Forums posters that were newborns when the 360 launched.
Some of the best video games ever made cannot be played on any toy computer console.
Yes, both consoles except Xbox have games being made exclusively for them. That means at some point they will be worth buying at x price with y number of exclusive games. Especially because with the latest batch of consoles the performance difference between consoles and PC has shrunk even smaller than before this is on top of PC exclusives seemingly demanding less and less from PC users in the form of power meaning said exclusives can be ran on a cheap build and the exclusive games being made for PC going to consoles at an accelerated rate because they're is no "PC" publisher.
just a quick question: who was around to purchase an nes brand new?
new consoles aim at 4k 120fps or raytracing, your office pc will be able to run them @ 1080p 60-30fps just fine if you're not too picky. Don't forget that the XBOXSS has something like a gtx1060-tier gpu.
>PC truly only achieved parity with consoles within this most recent generation.
True, and it's a very positive and solid trend that is continuing, which makes the doomposting nothing more than console warriors' pathetic wishful thinking.
I don’t know about that, man. I’m almost 40 and I don’t think I could name 10 worthwhile PC exclusives that aren’t in really niche genres like grand strategy or train/flight/whatever sims.
>at 4k 120fps
seriously, in what universe do console retards live in? I would kill to be this retarded, I'd worry about problems less. holy shit
