Video games as art

post games that are works of art. by this I mean "uses creative expression to convey meaningful human truths and/or explore philosophical ideas"

I'll start

>it's a weird fever dream so it's art
Fuck off with that shit. Pathologic was and still is shit.

you may hate it, but it is true

No, it's a weird fever dream AND it's art. If you discount a work of art for using surrealism then you're a pleb. here's a more grounded example though.

Perhaps

>it's a weird fever dream so it's art
>Fuck off with that shit. Pathologic was and still is shit
theres a 100% guarantee that you've never even played it

Been meaning to play this for ages, just got it on sale. Looking forward to it. Also, for games as art
>Ico
>SotC
>Rain World
>Journey

I wish more games were willing to frustrate/impede the player for greater immersion.

The meaningful human truth conveyed herein: killing monstrous, tribal aliens inside artificial mechanical complexes as a cybernetic supersoldier in the void is incredibly FUN with friends.

Read 'Waiting for Godot' before you knock surrealistic art you nonce.

Deus Ex

Could not get into this game at all.
The story seemed interesting but I was spending all my time scrounging for food scraps so I wouldn't starve to death.
Stopped playing when you learn how to treat people and realized I'd have to do even MORE scrounging for all the medical supplies.

Except it's not, not even in the slightest. Why do you whine about a game you not only haven't played, but literally don't know ANYTHING about? Is the game making you so insecure?

Yeah, the game IS a resource management game. That is the core gameplay mechanic of it, there is no way around it. The systems are not doubt and shallow, there is quite a lot of depth and levels to it, a lot of tricks you can learn, and it all ties wonderfully to the story itself, but if you just can't stand resource management games, it's unfortunately not a game for you.
You should not feel bad about that, everyone has genres and types of gameplay they can't deal with.

The Void and Knock-Knock by the same developers are a given.
Team Ico are probably the next in the rare examples of games that not only achieve fantastic artistic merrits, but kinda transcend the whole "genre" fiction model.

Some honorable mentions to games that may be quite clear genre fiction, but still achieve notable artistic merrits would to me be:
Homeworld
Silent Hill 2
Cryostasis
Jet Set Radio
Okami
Rain World
Braid
Bastion

In every form. It doesn't have a single bad frame, refuses to utter a single word, and yet it explores both human nature and our desire for communication.

R-TYPE KICKS ASS

not a game that makes you satisfied by watching XP and numbers go up in a skinner box fashion, not a grand dramatic sobstory, it's a playable journal of a writer completely losing his marbles

First of all, Godot is an absurdist play, not surreal. Second of all, expecting anyone here to read, much less read or watch something as experimental as Godot is pretty naive.

Look, I love Deus Ex as much as the next guy, I must have finished it maybe fifteen times, it's an amazing title and rightly considered one of the best games of all time, but:
It's a half-comedy pastiche of silly conspirational theory with characters and writing of a paperback 50's 6pence novel. As a game it's amazing, but claiming it's an artistic achievement really seems odd to me.

>Looking forward to it.
Be patient.
Pay attention to what the game teaches you.
When it teaches you to trade with everyone, TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.
Don't buy food in stone shops, it's a waste of money. You can get it easier by trade, especially with kids.
Buy the bull.
Don't bother with the revolver early in the game.
And whatever fucking happens, DON'T TAKE THE DEAL.

Best of luck.

Katamari depicts the real world in a wacky and nonosensical way, with brainless humans and fauna represented in non ordinary ways, ranging from angry and demented to absolutely joyfull and happy, in a world without meaning where the greatest joy is to be engulfed by a giant ball of random things to become a star in the sky.

Although it's full of Japanese cliches, the portrayals are relevant to almost any modern culture. And they deity depicted as an actual giant creature sending his son to restore the universe, is clearly an allegory to some well known religious myths.
