You need a large enclosure for hamsters or they get stressed. Generally high maintenence in terms of bedding requirments, space and hyper sensitive to stress. Could do with they weren't built for domestication but what can you do?
Loud noises, items from above, too fast movements, too small a cage are all triggers of stress and they can develop wet tail (fatal disease) from it. Really cute but very sensitive animals. One positive is their poop is surprisingly easy to clean.
