Are ultrawide gaming monitors just a meme?

Should I grab one or just wait until I can afford a really good 1440p 144hz monitor?

Depending on what you play, I guess. A lot of the stuff I enjoy is still 4:3, so for me ultrawide is a complete waste.

I had this exact same dilemma in 2016. They look cool but they are a meme. And you'd need a pretty deep desk to not put strain on your neck and give yourself a migraine for something that wide. Get 1440p 144hz.

Not a fan of ultrawide. I think 27 is the optimal size for monitors.

For games, generally yeah they're useless. If you like to have dual monitor setups, they're great. They're good for Creative work like music production and video editing, and I guess for streaming if you do that.

Also to add, a monitor is a very long-term investment. You'll replace every component in your machine before you replace a monitor. Don't cheap out on this part.

Had a 21:9 and my vision would blur up sometimes. Really strange, changed to 16:9 and it doesnt happen anymore

I think they're really nice for games, when supported of course. Then they're very nice for just about everything else.

Here is a protip: if you have to buy something intermediate while at the same time 'saving up' to buy something better you will ALWAYS be poor. The hobby of videogames will always be on the level of you using a laptop.

If I get a 4k monitor will there be any issues running shit at a lower resolution? Like blurred kinda image or whatever. Like I want the extra space for non gaming shit but I prolly can't run games at 4k.

UW is fantastic, but you pay a premium for it. Also not viable at 4k, if you're trying to get into that. You shouldn't be getting into that, but just in case.

>For games, generally yeah they're useless
lmao, you have no fucking clue what your talking about. I'd say ultrawide is better than 4k even for gaming. I wouldn't trade my monitor for a 4k one

29" 2560x1080 is nice and cheap but leaves a lot to be desired.
34" 2560x1080 is also cheap but it's fucking garbage.
34" 3440x1440 is the best but it's expensive as fuck (assuming non-shit tier monitor and GPU good enough to pull it off.

I downscale to 1440p on my 4k screen sometimes and it looks fine. Though I do sit a few good feet away. TVs have better image scaling tech so you may want to consider one of those.

Do these monitors come with any software for better window snapping? I assume win+left/right just snaps windows to two columns even on a big monitor like this, meanwhile on dual monitors I get 2x2columns.

The only time I can see ultrawide being useful for games is MMOs, explain your reasoning.

Find out the games you will play supporting ultrawide.

I am told it is hit and miss. This is why I decided to stick to 16:9.

my reasoning is having one and eyes. Ultrawide is better in every way for playing. 1st, it's less demanding on the gpu than 4k. I run every game ultra @21:9 above 100fps. And what you get out of it, from an immersion standpoint is so much better imo.
ignore the review of the monitor itself, this is just for purposes of showing the aspect ratio: youtu.be/JNjLWK-kwxM?t=289

What do you think of Samsung Odyssey G9 Monitor?

I think linus did a review on it, check it out
mine is 34inch and I'm very happy with it

They arent a meme unless you're a "Competitive FPS Gamer"
For movies they are awesome, more so than a TV since they fill the entire display rather than give you black bars.

"Optimal" a 34" Ultrawide is the same height as a 27"

buy a 42" 4k monitor and you'll have two UWs stacked on each other with no bezel.

You can get a good enough (non competitive) 34" 3440x1440 @100hz for $400 from MSI/AOC etc.

>If you can't afford something now you will never be able to afford it
What mindset is this

For gaming? nah. They are great for productivity though.

You're comparing resolutions and aspect ratios here dumbass. I never said anything about 4k. Also the exact moment you linked to:
>I don't think super-ultrawide is more immersive
Unless you're getting an absolutely massive monitor and have tons of desk space, ultrawide is just going to take away vertical space in place of adding more horizontal space. This is useful for running applications, but rarely do you need to see that far out to the sides in any games. Sure, if you have one large enough it's going to be a bit more immersive, but it shouldn't be a huge priority over other things. Also if you're talking super ultra-wide, they're a huge waste of money for games. Absolutely no game would take advantage of that and just requires you to move your head around constantly to see things outside of games.

Most games take performance hits in windowed. GSYNC in particular spergs out. It's nothing but a handicap for gaming.

have you ever had one? honest question

You could probably afford a triple monitor setup for less, with fewer compatability issues.

Both if you can afford it. I have a 1440p 144hz for gayming and most japanese games of course don't support ultrawide. And an ultrawide for the few games that do support it and for media and multitasking. Either one will set you back about $400.
If you can only choose one and you're working off of a dinky 23" 1080p monitor right now, I think you should prioritize the 1440p 144hz.
Ultrawide is fun but truth is not everything works well on it, and if you're watching 16:9 media, which makes up the majority of anime, tv, and even some movies, you get black bars on the sides. You'll end up begging developers for ultrawide support when they don't put it in their games and generally looking for reasons to make use of it.

I tend to just have my 3 16:9 1440 144 hz for gaming and then I use my 21:9 1440 144 hz for productivity, reading, shitposting, etc.

I love mine.
But it's a luxury, not a necessity.

Why would I waste all that money on something I don't want? I've used them before, and found it uncomfortable. Like I said I think standard ultrawide is great, though primarily for productivity.

That moment is pretty much saying exactly what I am.

i just got a 1440p 100hz ultrawide recently and it is very nice, makes me want to play on pc more than before

>I've used them before, and found it uncomfortable
alright man, that's fine. I on the other hand, wouldn't trade it for any other

Hard to swallow truthpill:
Large, high quality TV from a couch beats literally any desktop monitor for media consumption. And those are all 16:9 4K.

>not having both

>media consumption

I hate this fucking newspeak
