Nobody watches Hell's Kitchen for cooking tips or to marvel at the cooking skills. People watch it for Ramsay because he's entertaining. Similarly, most people could care less about the game being played on a stream; they're watching because the streamer is an entertaining or interesting person.

-if you watch a stream for the story part of a game, you dont pay for it, but get the same out of it
-streams build a community feel around a game, and even open up interactivity, like Dark Souls Arenas.
-Streamers also have communities that often certain games. So you can meet people to play there with

Pretty much this. Some people think having a really overly exaggerated and cringey personality and over reacting to things makes an interesting person. Some people watch The Amazing Race and The Bachelorette. Ill never understand any of them. At least those shows can't fleece children out of their money by having a button to instantly donate them money to get a character to vaguely acknowledge your existence (well your wallets existence anyway).

I'm an autistic boomer and I usually throw on some stream archive or let's play while I'm working.
When I think about it I technically do have someone else playing games more often than I actually play them.

I think it's because games are mostly over-budgeted movies nowadays. There's usually nothing to truly gain out of dropping $60 on a title when you could get the same experience for free.
There's only two games I played this year that I feel cannot be experienced through watching gameplay, and that's Doom Eternal and Watchdogs Legion.

If I were a 12 year old kid there is no way I would be interested in AAA movie-game shlock when I can get the experience for free and instead buy microtransactions for Fortnite Of Duty 3: Legends.
It's a genuine alternative to buying a game with a story that interests you.
