Mortal Kombat uhhhh doesn't really have a protagonist, at least in the scheme of things. Liu Kang has been killed and humiliated well throughout the series. You could equally argue Johnny Cage, Cassie Cage and Raiden are just as important.

He was at least seen as the protagonist in the early days. The first movie which many still regard as the best game movie ever made he is the main protagonist of. I'm guessing they only killed him because MK is a brutal and gory franchise to begin with so it makes sense to me.

literally no one considers it a good movie so if it's the best vidya movie, then we really are praising the bottom of the barrel. There are better animated vidya movies out there if that counts. Even the direct-to-DVD animated Mortal Kombat movie is way better than the live action one from the 90's.

The game itself is notorious for having some of the worst and most generic anime twink character designs in fighting games. The female characters alone have almost no facial detail and look like they belong in a high school romcom.
