It's just super inconsistent. The game is an asset flip of a cancelled PS4/XBone open world RPG. Some areas seemed to be developed pretty well (probably meant for trade shows) which others looked like N64 areas. Then you also have areas fucked over by the lighting change, which astonishingly hasn't been put into a modern release of the game.
Despite all this, I still have a lot of fondness for 2. I have been blasting through 3 recently, and it doesn't feel as memorable, minus the good the good boss fights. 2 also has a lot of content by comparison.

You've been handicapped by your dependence on locking on. The truth is that if you go back to Demon's Souls, you get fucked over in the first area unless you learn crowd management without lock on.
Dark Souls 2 is my favorite Souls game and I'm sick of the fence sitters who try to placate the spastics with wording like "it's the worst souls game but it's still pretty good" and other shit like that. And no, Scholar of the First Sin is not a "completely different game," at least not when you compare it to vanilla DS2 after they put out a bunch of updates. Compared to DS2 at launch it's fairly different but overall SotFS is the best way to play the game, and arguably it's the best game to enter the series with.

crowd management is my favorite part of dark souls combat but the way DS2 does it is lazy and incompetent
in DS3 every crowd encounter has a structure, its never just >7 dudes in a room, its something more like >2 guys with shields followed by 1 AOE enemy and 4 archers on the back

DS2 has little to no ambushes, terrain almost never interacts with enemy placement and combat and so on
its shit, and "difficulty" isnt the problem, its design thats lacking
DS3 is the best souls and it triggers autists because it doesnt allow game breaking strategies unlike any other souls
DeS is the worst overall and DS2 follows close after

It's an asset flip of DS1, tard. People say it's full of shit because it's literally full of shit. In your jail cell in DS1's opening there is a unique jar, found no where else in the game. It is the jar you shit in, literally. There's turds in the jar. It's a fantastic, tiny detail. Not realizing this, seeing only an urn of small size, the DS2 dev team just copy and pasted it all over the world. DS2 is literally full of shit.

It was meant to be a different game, and it was completely changed mid development. It was meant to be a huger game and was cut down. Anything reused from DaS1 were bandaid solutions to filling in the gaps. Otherwise, all the original assets were meant for different things.
