Get ready to get inventive to solve some problems. Your colony might have to resort to cannibalism, and you might have to kill a colonist to avoid them destroying an item worth far more than their life. You might even amputate a prisoner's legs to stop them from trying to escape.
It's fun as shit. is right though. It's good to have goals in mind, but imo permadeath mode is the way to go because the cruelty of the Rim is just part of the game. Don't savescum.

Play mostly vanilla to start, but definitely get this mod. It turns interaction logs into Sims-like bubbles. It's great for flavor.
