Still rocking a HRAP 4 Kai that I bought half a decade ago. Recently switched the parts out for Sanwa buttons and lever though.
I barely play fighting games nowadays and use it for arcade and rhythm games since it's an arcade stick.

if they use them (many don't) it's for either convenience of having select nearby for training room or for the multibutton macros, like 1+2+4 which can be a little cumbersome to input traditionally

no, it's literally in the game's keybinds, it's not like a separate software or something. It was technically added to make playing on pad possible since hitting 3 or more face buttons at once is impossible without a claw grip, but it's a part of the game now and there's no reason not to use it

Here's something you may not realize. Fighting games back in the late 90s in arcades all the way up to 2010 often had different button layouts. Even Korea, Japan, America, and EU had slightly different button placements.
The 8 button with the curve it has is basically to be a catch all so you can play any fighting game layout and switch between the Asian curve style or Western straight button style.

You can make combo macros in AHK if you really wanted to but it'll probably only be doable in challenges.

It's not too hard, just find a template for your button layout online and tack it down to the face surface, then just some hole bits that are the right size for your buttons and cut some holes. Other than that it's just a box, you could get as fancy or simple as your want for the corner joins. You could dovetail to flex or just a glue block connection would also work fine if you don't want to try hard.
