Yakuza 3 was a mistake for multiple reasons.

Can't build a second one if he's fucking dead and the children are all traumatized from watching his brain juices splatter all over it.

Yasuko ruins the plot by being insufferable at every turn. I hated every moment spent with that hypocritical retard. At least Park had the decency to die early on.
Saejima's section is absolutely dreadful. The only chapters where you don't have to deal with Yasuko are the painful forced stealth chapters. Great fucking game.
And none of the minigames or substories save it. They're all mediocre or done better in a different game in the series.

That means it's how he writes Kiryu and it shows in the games, also there's a loading screen in 6 which says Yumi is the only person he's ever loved

Arent the loading screens only in the english version of 6? They even explain honorifics like aniki for whatever fag decided to start with it. The ono michio substory is where he says he only loved one person and im sure i remember the loading screen actually pointing out that yumi isn’t the only one he loved.

Substories are "sitcom canon", any end result that would change the status quo too much is ignored, but the events still mostly happen.

Right, and the status quo is Kiryu being a sexless virgin. His actions in the hostess substories only exist to support the players' enjoyment of these franchise-spanning minigames, not to support Kiryu's character.
Kiryu (and by extension and protagonist) will often act out of character during substories in order to progress their plots. They can't be treated as canon material.
