In 28 years of being a video game nerd in elementary school and a successful career, I've noticed an almost 1:1 correlation between people with this many hours in video games and people who have a defeatist attitude in life and blame society/capitalism/etc for their lack of success, love, relationships, etc. Seriously, almost 1:1. There might be a correlation, but you can't really tell what's cause and effect. Failing in those areas might well be what causes people to compensate by immersing themselves in vidya, rather than vidya making them fail at achieving success.

I don't think so, atleast past a point. I've seen many many many times where in high school and college I would tell my friends "Hey man, want to study for the test?" etc and they would rather play vidya. It's a complete choice most of the time. In our society it's very hard not to be modestly well off if you put in the work. I've tried hundreds of hours with one of my friends, offered him tutoring, etc. but he'd rather play video games.
