When did Xeno series became a nintendo property? I thought they were always PlayStation at the start? Did they get bought out?

Square own Gears, Bamco own Saga, and Ninty own Blade. Technically they're all part of an overall Xeno series, but the only two that play along are Saga and Blade since Square are Square.

They were bought in 2007 and are one of Nintendo's most important studios at this point.
They make the Xenoblade series internally, are working on another new IP right now, co-develop Zelda as of Breath of the Wild, and do a lot of code monkey support work on titles like Pikmin and Animal Crossing.

They were first a dev studio for Squaresoft I think. Some time after Gears release, Takahashi and Squaresoft got into some argument I think and Takahashi moved to Namco where he started making Xenosaga as his new dev studio Monolith Soft. Xenogears is owned by Square Enix now.
After Xenosaga 2 didn't live up to its expectation, they rushed the Xenosaga series (which was planned to be six parts) and ended it with 3. Namco Bandai owns the right to Xenosaga, so Takahashi had to leave the project behind.
Fast forward to 2010-ish. Nintendo bought Monolith Soft I think and now Takahashi wanted to make a new game, Soma Bringers which resulted in Xenoblade as we know today.

They are very competent developer and help nintendo with their IPs like Zelda.

I genuinely don't understand how Nintendo signed off on renaming Monado to Xenoblade without someone blatantly pointing out that linking it to these past two series might not work in its favor saleswise. Or they thought the Wii audience wouldn't register other company games?

Plus, for all we shitpost about sticking games on the Switch and then they suddenly sell gangbusters, there have been a number of ports that still tanked after rereleasing on the Switch. TMS died a second time, Bayo 2 didn't do that much better, I think Pikmin 3 hasn't done better either.

Given their sheer reluctance to even test the waters for the game overseas until Operation Rainfall I doubt they ever really expected it to be a big success. The explosion of the series' popularity later on seems to have taken the whole company by surprise, it went from being an afterthought that took ages to localize to one of their higher priority franchises overnight.

Pikmin 3 seems to have done well in Japan and abysmally in the west. Which is mostly their fault, I get hourly ads for Age of Calamity but Pikmin 3 wasn't even worth a post on the Switch's news app.
