I haven't played Nintendo since the 1990s (NES) but I wonder why Nintendo has taken such a hard line against competitive play. Is it really THAT damaging to their brand they can't let a vocal minority promote the game? First I hate melee trannies, that being said...So every sport ever? The reason why esports are shit is because of that actually. You dont see the chess association releasing Chess 2, chess 3 or the fifa releasing soccer 4, soccer 5. Sure one rule might change once in a while, but its the same fucking sport. The fact that can put years and decades on it is a good thing. With videogames once they move from game 1 to game 2, you can translate the basics but you must learn everything else from zero. Thats why the players might win some money but will never achieve legend status.
Because the games change each 5 years and so they dont last. The only exceptions being CS 1.6 these days. A game lasting 20 years is good, it means its a good game, of course as a company you want the people to buy your new product, and so you push the older games to die and try to forcefuly move the players into the new ones.
One of the 5 fundamental rules of a sport to be a SPORT is literally "you cant have a single company provide the stuff needed for the sport". Because it happens exactly this. The company will force you to consume their new products because its in their interest. And the only Smash provider is Nintendo.
