Just finished this. Honestly? Pretty let down. After seeing all the 9/10 reviews, seeing this in people's 3x3s and what not, I honestly expected a really solid game and what I got was far from it.
I honestly have more bad than good to say about this game so I guess I'll start with the good. For a decade old game it looks pretty solid. Strong visual style even if some of the models look goofy as hell. Everything can look a bit muddy or blurry at times though. The music actually surprised me. Is it gonna blow your mind? no but i didn't actively hate it either. It was pretty nice.
I think that's about it for complements. The first hour of the game is excruciatingly boring. Cutscene after cutscene after boring walking sequence (that makes you fucking manually walk!). Holy fuck what a shit first impression. The game is honestly shit until halfway through when you start opening up the map and unlocking more upgrades. The combat system is simple as hell but pretty fun once you get all the upgrades and can play around with them but the issue is it's just so fucking inconsistent and controls are clunky as hell. So you have these interesting systems but the most consistent thing to do is just mash attack until they're all down or to just spam stealth takedown/inverted takedown until they're all down because they thought contextual controls were a good idea. Totally ruins the vision the devs were going for. Ironically the most interesting part of the game was the side content. The challenge mode with improved AI and the Riddler challenges are the only thing in this damn game that made me "feel like batman" for a fleeting moment.
There's so much I could shit on honestly. If it weren't for the occasional nice piece of music, the occasional fight sequence that plays out like the devs intended, and poison ivy's nice ass, I'd say this game is trash but when it works as intended, it can be pretty fun. It's a 7/10 at best. Really hope Arkham City is better
What exactly do you expect it's gonna be? A COD shooter with danganroppa mysteries? It's the same game with a more open Gotham city. There are some riddles here and there, the combat is same old same old, the bosses are dogshit but the voice acting and the music is fantastic. Flying and batswinging in the city feels better than Asylum. But asylum has a more interesting setting by far. It would need a lot more investigation and better combat to be a 9/10. But they still hold up as really decent games
Literally the best superhero game ever made and one of the very few worth playing. You don't often see a game from 2009 holding up so well more than a decade later.
Daniel Ortiz
I mean it might be the best superhero game but if that's true, it's not saying much
Jason Fisher
I forgot to say that it's also one of the best games ever made. Arkham City is also one of the best games ever made.
Lucas Sullivan
I honestly debated whether asylum was a 6/10. I don't think it holds up at all. it feels really dated. I'm not trying to shit on you but bro play more games. it really doesn't hold up. I guess i just expect city to improve on all the flaws asylum has but if you're saying it doesn't then I guess I wasted more money. I'll still play it though to form my own opinion
Gavin Lopez
you can't honestly believe this.
Connor Flores
Not that user but you feel so confident, do you ever question yourself "what if my opinions are shit"? Maybe you might.
Adam Garcia
I do believe this, and there are quite a lot of people who will agree with me.
Mason Martinez
alright I'm willing to hear why you think so then.
Ian Wright
Lonely?
Logan Thomas
I believe that you're gay.
Noah Gonzalez
no I just can't fathom how you could consider a very average (maybe even below average) game to be one of the best games of all time. Like what are you seeing that I'm not? the story is simplistic as hell barebones stuff you'd expect from mario, visuals are decent but nothing special, same with the music, gameplay ranges from repetitive and inconsistent to just pretty fun. Like where is the great game, user?
Wyatt Rodriguez
>bam ham >thought it would be good from 9/10's and 3x3's lol I wouldn't say it's a bad game, but it really is just normalfag b8.
Mason Edwards
well read the thread. apparently some nutjobs think it's one of the best games of all time. I guess standards just change over time. People thought this was a 9/10 at the time of release. I wonder what highly acclaimed games we'll consider just okay in the future
Kevin Walker
Go play pong and shit all over it for being simplistic so we can laugh at you user.
Zachary Miller
like I said normalfag b8.
Noah James
So you can't even comprehend that a lot of shit in those games refined or invented something that was used later ad nauseam so it wouldn't be groundbreaking by the time you play it? Go play the original Demon's souls and complain how Demon's 3 looks better and it's more refined while at it. how stupid can you be? >muh normie Trying to fit in i see
John Martinez
Arkham knight would be by far the best if it wasn't for the fucking tank sections . God those are so boring
Ian Ortiz
at least pong is consistent lmao
Lincoln Garcia
it's a game in a comic book setting, that isn't complete ass; of course it's going to get praised. there was nothing groundbreaking at the time of release. it was and still is a mediocre action game.
Hunter Long
what? no. games don't get brownie points for being the first or inventing something, if it doesn't hold up, it doesn't hold up. fuck outta my face with that participation trophy bullshit
Asher Scott
well it's a good thing I bought arkham knight too then. hope it's as good as you say
Xavier Watson
faggot
Nolan Adams
No, I think the complaints you actually listed are solid criticisms. The inconsistant/clunky combat especially hits home, because City and Knight are very, very smoothed out by comparison, even though they're using basically the same system(Origins fucked up timings a little, but it still feels better than Asylum.) If you enjoyed it enough to not be unhappy with it, I'd suggest going ahead with City, yeah. It sounds like you'll be happier with it.
Jaxon Morris
lol
Mason Morgan
good to hear. downloading city right now
Justin Cox
I replayed all of these games like 2 or 3 years ago and I remember thinking how trash the combat in AA was compared to the later games. You can actually freeflow everything and it's much more satisfying in City. From then on, the combat is mostly the same. Origins or whatever the fuck it was called just adds overpowered shock gloves, Knight smooths eveything else but goddamn the Batmobile shit is boring. Those shock gloves are pretty satisfying, even if they are busted though.
Ayden Smith
I wonder if the Gotham Knights game will play anything like the Arkham games
Joseph Watson
I haven't seen a Bamham thread in a while. Here's the obligatory ranking:
Ahead of its time? Sure, by only a couple years but I completely agree this has not aged well at all.
Connor Bailey
I also could not get into Arkham Asylum and actually didn't ever finish it. For what it's worth, I *did* finish and LOVED City, though. City is an absolutely fantastic game. I tried Knight but didn't like it. Never played Origins.
