I'm years late to this but I started playing Doom 2016 earlier today
>Never played any other Doom game >Don't play FPS games often >Vaguely aware of what the gameplay style is due to tons of video essays and praise about the gameplay people heap on it >It was on sale on Steam earlier so decided to get it. Why not right? >Boot it up, see what the fuss is about
What the hell is up with this mismatched gameplay? The combat sections are intense but really short and then you have long stretches of absolute quiet while you explore the map for collectibles. I was under the impression the game was all ACTION ACTION GO GO GO but it feels more like 40% shooting and 60% platforming puzzles and peeking around corners for funko pops of yourself
It's such a weird mismatch between what the game is sold as, especially when everyone praises it for the nonstop action but you genuinely spend more time looking for goddamn secrets
Related to this, the pottering about with menus and leveling up your gear feels out of place. The game sells itself as MURDER KILL FEST but then you pull up your menu to sort through your praetor tokens and deciding what talents you want to upgrade
I also have an issue with how unreliable the glorykills are. Even when using the basic pistol, sometimes enemies just die before you can melee them. And that's really awkward since this is clearly the main source of health and ammo in the game. Why is it so inconsistent? I get that headshots might just kill an enemy instantly, but even deliberately doing body shots sometimes outright kills them.
The combat isn't particularly innovative either? It's literally just "shoot guys" but at least you don't duck behind cover like more realistic shooters. I appreciate that, and that super cautious approach is why I don't play FPS games often, but like.... this is kinda too far in the opposite direction. I'm kinda just running in there and UNGA BUNGA spamming F to punch people until they explode into HP.
>ACTION ACTION GO GO GO That's what online kid's shooters are about. Single player maze crawls generally are about ambushes and prep mixed with key hunts.
Jackson Harris
>It's such a weird mismatch between what the game is sold as, especially when everyone praises it for the nonstop action but you genuinely spend more time looking for goddamn secrets this is how the original games are too just so you know
Andrew Russell
I was under the impression online kid shooters were all like, camping to get headshots and then getting headshot yourself. Then bitching online about campers, as if you didn't try to do that yourself.
I tried PUGB when it first got popular and that was my impression of it. I assume Fortnite is that plus building to make your own sniper nests?
Lincoln Gonzalez
>he didn't save the autistic secret hunting to a second playthrough >he didn't play on a hard enough difficulty for enemies to become an actual threat
Not really. you kind of just become aware of how they hide secrets and kind intuitively find them
Jose Peterson
Doom2016 is horrible specially after playing Eternal. Just pretend the game doesn't exist
Gabriel Cruz
Is that so? Then I can't exactly criticise it for staying true to form.
...Why do people describe it so differently then? Is it a bunch of secondaries who are just pretending to know what the original was about but are explaining it poorly? Cause seriously, no one EVER talks about this side of Doom 2016.
God the only secrets I ever hear people talk about with the original Doom is: >There's a strong weapon behind you when you first spawn in >One of the devs or a rival dev or something is secretly the final boss? But it's their severed head on a stick shooting fireballs, or something?
Henry Lopez
>tons of video essays cringe
Angel Ross
>The combat isn't particularly innovative either? Why the fuck are you asking this in question form. Are you asking us if the combat isn't particularly innovative? Speak properly, you goddamn amerimutt subhuman.
Robert Barnes
Does it have NG+ or something?
If it was purely collectibles for the sake of collectibles, I'd ignore them or do them later. But since they give you stat points, why would you NOT go out of your way to look for them right?
John Edwards
It’s fucking 2:00 AM in US of A Rent free
Logan Brown
God you’re such a fucking faggot. Why even play video games?
John Smith
in the original doom you shoot enemies for 2 minutes and then spend 15 minutes wandering around the map if you get lost. I dunno why people describe the games as some kind of constant murder fest.
Gabriel Reyes
because most people arent retarded and get lost for 15 minutes
Bentley Robinson
I don't know either! But like, that's FINE! If all of the hype and advertising and stuff painted a more accurate picture, I wouldn't be weirdly disappointed like "Oh, that's it?" after every fight!
I'm getting that I'm being a bit unfair to the game, but on the other hand you can't deny that the game's been marketed in a very deliberate way that's not being reflected in the actual product. Can you really blame me for having the wrong preconceptions about it?
Landon White
>watching video essays Wanna know how I know you're a massive faggot?
Halfway through trying to respond to each of your points I decided to just call you a faggot instead. Get some taste or at least some better criticisms than "I'm not killing things during every second of gameplay, fuck this game"
Dylan Wood
That only happened in Doom 2 a lot of maps had terrible game design and you didn't know where to start, they were like mini open worlds instead of linear ones.
Parker Powell
this
Evan Cooper
What's wrong with video essays? They're like podcasts but structured instead of a couple of guys rambling.
>I was under the impression the game was all ACTION ACTION GO GO GO but it feels more like 40% shooting and 60% platforming puzzles This is videogames in general, it's called pacing you faggot
Aiden Stewart
But I constantly hear people say things like "Oh man, Doom is SO heavy on combat that it ruins the pacing! There just isn't enough DOWNTIME to give the game proper PACING because it's so COMBAT HEAVY"
And that's a goddamn lie.
Oliver Bell
literally never heard this once before, the complaint is always either being funneled into using a specific weapon against a particular enemy (no fun allowed) or having very little ammo forcing you to use an ability to replenish ammo (no fun allowed)
Brayden Barnes
These people are retards, probably looking for a contrarian opinion to sound interesting.
Adam Sullivan
Legitimately play Ultimate Doom and Doom II. Classic Doom is great, nu-Doom is just another FPS but using an old franchise as its skin.
Carson Perez
Play Quake 1 instead if you want an FPS with actual good level design. No bullshit "combat section" or "exploration section", each level is actually cohesively designed.
Charles Perry
Just play Ultimate Doom instead of spouting nonsense, dude.
Thomas Sanchez
>in the original doom you shoot enemies for 2 minutes and then spend 15 minutes wandering around the map if you get lost. I dunno why people describe the games as some kind of constant murder fest.
Pretyy much this it's more about micro-memorization of map layouts while dealing with enemy setup puzzles. Once you solve all the puzzles you're left with the architecture alone.
Also if anyone wants, Tim did a fucking stellar review of the original DOOM. >inb4 3 fuckin hours youtube.com/watch?v=38zduHkwGcc It's Tim, it's worth it.
Eli Sullivan
user no OP is going to watch that instead of actually playing the game first, what have you done?
Matthew Walker
Never heard of Ultimate. What is it, like a remake or remaster of the originals?
