You really don't understand how intellectual properties and licensing work. A tournament that runs a game and is being paid for in various ways has to get the authorization, sponsorship, endorsement or simple go-ahead to the company / license holder that holds the product. Often a cut of the cash. This tournament was straight up going to be an unauthorized yet highly publicized tourney without Nintendo's permission or anything like that. The fact that it was running on emulation just made it an easy target. You run tourneys with tickets, you best keep them local and out of the spotlight because someone like Capcom wouldn't like you profiting off of Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom online on something big with no say from them.
