Winston is the most uninteresting character and there's really no story. The main protagonist is a vessel that allows the reader to explore the various facets of a totalitarian society, and it that regard, the book does a great job in compartmentalizing each aspect. Some parts are better handled than others (the worst part is probably when Winston reads Goldstein's manifest).

Those are praised for the writing, not the story, at least MGS1,2 and 3 are. The people like the character interactions, the CODECs, the insanity of it all, the PLOT of MGS1 and 2 in itself is pretty banal and has been seen countless times in media.
