It was pretty good at the time but barely anyone ever properly utilized it for vidya. That, and it was mostly marketing speak anyway. It's just a Sony thing. The PS4 was exactly the same when it came to retarded shit like the "supercharged PC".

The development was too expensive to ever be profitable or something like that.
By itself the cell isn’t really special but when you link a bunch of them together it really shines. A bunch of PS3s linked together actually makes a decent supercomputer.
IIRC the US Air Force used a bunch of PS3s for satellite image processing or something like that

"Supercomputer" as a term is kinda misleading since it implies that it's superior to other devices. For general use, it isn't. For a few specific types of calculations, it's better, and that's why you had them use PS3s for that shit.

It has a main CPU and 6 separate "SPU" cores that can do a ton of physics/AI/sound but most devs were too lazy to use it properly.
Devkits and documentation were a fucking mess in the first few years, that's why many devs barely used the SPUs and many PS3 ports were worse.

If you hack your PS3 and install CFW, you can only install other CFW's from that point on, if you try to install an official update you'll brick your console (not permanently but it takes time to undo it)
