YS

RED PILL me on this series

Where do I start?
What do I skip?
Is it even a good series or is it dogshit?

Throw your red pills at me.

Start with 1, retard.

Isometric > bumper cars > party

Definitely play Oath in Felghana and Origin. Ark of Naphistim exists if you want more. Playing I & II Chronicles is like playing classic Resident Evil, if the controls don't bother you then the level designs peak here. Party Ys is okay but the flash mechanics are a bit too abusable for their own good. Lacrimosa of Dana is probably the most well liked one though Seven, Memories of Celceta and soon IX are all options too. If I didn't list it, don't worry about it unless you've played everything here and want to dive even deeper, and don't worry much about continuity as it doesn't matter THAT much.

are you a fag that needs an easy entry? start with oath or origin.
otherwise start with chronicles which is 1 and 2 and then go from there.

This is an ancient image.

1 and 2 chronicles are kino, just play them both. Nightmare mode is miserable, I'd suggest hard at most.

Is is amazing, start with Ys 1+2 Chronicles. Don't listen to the people shitting on the bump system, it's fucking great.

After that go to Oath in Felghana/Origin/Ark of Naphistim. Then if you like you can go into the "party" games like Ys 7 8 and 9, although they're not my cup of tea personally.

The series gets self-referential in later games thanks to the protagonist's growing reputation, but for the most part each release is fairly self-contained. You can start with bump combat in the original game (recommended: TurboGrafx for retro, or the 1&2 Chronicles for the modern experience) to get a feel for the series, jump into the more well-known titles like Oath of Felghana and Ys Origin for more standard combat (not the original Ys 3 by any means), or if you really want to dive into the more modern stuff, Ys VIII is pretty solid in its own right and the best of the party games. The series has a lot of evolution and all, but it's not difficult to get into once you understand what you're looking for.

Just be sure that if you go on a series-wide binge you skip Ys V. And if you're ever curious about what came before Memories of Celceta as the reimagining that it was, Dawn of Ys is a fun little romp of its own even if it was non-canon.

if you play 1, be patient until you get your first couple level ups, you are weak as fuck and it seems tedious at first.

this

58 days left until Ys IX on PS4.

absolutely based bump-bros

totally forgot about that one, still have to finish 8. I found the games after Seven really mediocre

it's too far away

I liked Celceta well enough at the time but I can't seem to stay with Lacrimosa.

if I see an updated one then I'll save it.

Anyone have that "what I expected" vs "what I got" image for Ys 1 with the guitar and seadoo? Love that one.

Start with 1, skip the ones that aren't on PC.

this. I hear a lot of praise about the Party Ys games, but I could just never really get into them. Something about Adol fighting with a party seems wrong to me

How long is YS VIII anyway? People are saying it's 50 hours long, but I'm only at 17 hours and just started Chapter 5. I've done every raid, quest, etc. Is Chapter 5 just THAT long, or am I just breezing through it too quickly? I'm playing on Normal since it's my first go around and then will try Nightmare or maybe even Inferno.

i only played oath in felghana. are all of the games this stupid hard? i've played a number of games that are considered hard but holy fuck that game is by far the most trouble i've ever had with a game

Fuck walls.

my final save with the blatinum trophy was this much

catshit overrated franchise

I don't think oath is that hard, it just have some difficulty spikes here and there, just rinse and repeat and you'll get it

>Nightmare mode is miserable
Facts.

>1->2->Origin->4
That's always bothered me. What's with that order? Why Origin before 4?

I feel like there's some trick I'm missing to the Dark Fact fight aside from the obvious "stick to the walls so you don't fuck yourself over"

gitgud :^)

>some trick
Yeah if you have a high refresh rate monitor turn that shit down to 60Hz because Facts speed is tied to it.

I've been going through the games that are on steam and I'm on Seven. They're fun games and I definitely recommend getting them during the next sale.
