Besides SMB 2 there weren't any established Players 3 or 4 in the series. NSMB Wii introduced the toads and Mario Maker and NSMB U seem to have standardized Toadette in the line-up

She has enough setting her apart from Toad to be worthwhile, Blue/Yellow toad were literal pallet swaps. Toadette at least has her own voice lines, animations and special powerup with Peachette. You might as well say Luigi is just Mario again with that logic.
