I can't name the actual cause but I sure as shit know when and where it started: Mass Effect 3. 2012 was the canary in the coal mine and 2013 fucking exploded with disasters like Aliens Colonial Marines, Bioshock Infinite, and a certain breed of alligator.

Mass Effect 3 is a nice point to call AAA games as dead.
The fact that the developers had the tenacity to end a game series like Mass Effect with an abrupt choice of three endings which don't rely on any of your previous actions. The loading screens of the original Mass Effect said that choices in the game would end up mattering a lot in future games, and it was all undone by ME3. All the forced diversity was cringy as fuck with the gay man always giving you a dialogue choice to imply you are straight or imply you are gay, it was genuinely strange that Shepard would be fine with some random crewmate hitting on him like that's way out of line for a military ship...
Also this game was the first time that I can remember that AAA devs claimed their critics were "entitled" and "racist" and "sexist" and "homophobic."
