emulating the arcade version in mame is fairly accurate
the pc-engine port is faithful but has a slightly awkward vertical scroll. there's also a new boss added to stage 6 after the endurance trial
playstation R-Types is a compilation of 1 & 2
and R-Type Dimensions is currently the best way to experience the first 2 games on modern platforms
R-Type 2 is kinda strange and isn't nearly as likable as the first game but i think they sorta rectify things with Super R-Type. it's kinda a half port of 2 with some new stuff. 3rd lightning and Delta are also bretty cool. BUT R-Type Leo has never been ported to a home console and the best way to play it is in MAME, preferably the Japanese version. you don't respawn mid-stage and are forced to learn the layouts. be hardcore!
to finish my post, it is possible that someday r-type, gradius, darius may crossover. there have been talks but r-type final 2 will decide the future.

I have and to be honest I found it really annoying how slow your ship is when you take in mind that speedups are only given out at specific occasions unlike gradius or fantasy zone. Despite my feelings about the original game though I really liked R-Type Leo and want to try R-Type 3/Delta.
