I played this as a small child. The story was so emotionally devastating at the time, it's never left me since. Also the bit about King (who seemed like an asshole but was just looking out for his people) really hit me hard because my dad was deployed at the time and he reminded me of him. Plus all the *little* details that give this game so much character. I think more than anything else this game convinced me that no AI could ever make art on the same level as human beings.

Holy shit I just read a thread on the Cave Story forums about this and you're absolutely right. Everything from the people at the office building where most of the game takes place being assholes to them speaking in a language the frog can't understand makes so much sense now. And there's all these depressing undertones to the game that you can only figure out by accessing secret areas.
