As someone who played every gen up to 6 at least once, why is HGSS the only entry that really charmed me? The only one that comes in even a league near it is Emerald, but it's still really lacking in comparison.

Johto had a good atmosphere, but I honestly enjoyed revisiting Kanto more, even more than actually playing it with Yellow/Firered.
You might be right. I hate to use the word "soul" with how widely differently people will take it, but so much of it comes down to the music, and I love so many HGSS tracks.

Crystal and emerald were peak content. After this point, every game is about how much GF can take away and still have a viable product.
There was literally no reason to remove radio and day/night. No reason for single region endgame. No reason to create a national dex.
Horn had some cool features as replacement, but where's the fucking bug catching contest? The high level grind? WTF is a contest anyway?
