Similar thing could happen with some Pokemon while traded, every Pokemon that evolves by Trading in Gen 1 was suppose to ONLY evolve when Traded to their counter-part >Machoke to Graveller >Haunter to Kadabra Of course it never worked exactly like that because of engine limitations at the time, but the lore is there.
As you can see in pic-related, when you traded them, they would be fused by accident, same with Kadabra and Haunter.
The Ghost made of smoke gains a more material body, gains actual mass becoming Gengar, while Kadabra looks way more fragile and senile but in exchange his psychic powers increase after the ghost saps the life outta him, turning into Alakazam.
It also explains why you can never catch them in the wild. They aren't natural Pokemon but instead a human accident.
Obviously this concept was not only hard to code back then, but as we know after the success of Gen 1 how GF focused their games to be more family-friendly, this concept also got dropped for being too dark.

Its literally explained in the post that due to obvious coding and engine limitations at the time they couldn't lock it. Karrablast and Shelmet are Pokemon that use this concept of locked-trade, and they only came out in Gen 5.
