Where did this idea of 'gamer culture' come from? It's literally just another form of media. No one goes around saying shit like "oi bro, do you movie?" or "i'm such a hardcore comicer dude", so why the fuck do people think people who play vidya talk like this?
Where did this idea of 'gamer culture' come from? It's literally just another form of media...
Playing video games as an adult is a shameful practice, this is society's way of making fun of you, they're outing you as different from other people.
How the hell is it shameful? Fair enough if your man's playing neopets at 40 or something, but just playing games in general is literally no different from watching tv or something exepct for the fact that its interactive.
Are you saying DC vs Marvel isnt culture
Citizen Kane elitists isnt a form of culture?
It's less socially acceptable than watching TV.
I'm aware, and my whole fucking point is 'why is that'
Because you can watch TV without making it your whole life.
Same with games. Theres just as many autists who spend their whole lifes watching whatever the fuck they air these days are the are autists who play vidya their whole lives
I mean the time investment involved.
Even if you're obsessed with a particular series, you probably don't watch it for more than 1 hour a week, 1 hour of gameplay is nothing.
Plus, you have people's preconceived notions that gaming is a waste of time and they're not wrong.
this was always weird to me
playing games is always seen as a lazy, antisocial hobby
but they take more effort than watching tv, which is socially acceptable
Marketing Term.
They needed a label to slap on the growing consumer base that enjoy playing video games.
"Gamer" is a short, catchy term that denotes everything you need to know. Sure "games" is used for other things like sports but those are "sports fans" or a specific sport fan. Video Gamer and Video Game fans does not roll off the tongue and too complex.
Not to say the average consumer would find the phrase complex, but it's not memorable and not something thats easy to just throw out in casual conversations or more importantly marketing material.
that's debatable
a lot of people spend their entire free time watching series and sports
>an hour a day
Thats two episodes. With streaming and shit people always binge whole seasons or even series in at most 3 sittings
>waste of time
Literally all media is a waste of time
>Even if you're obsessed with a particular series, you probably don't watch it for more than 1 hour a week,
That is just naive and an extreamly outdated view of how normies interact with TV let alone the people who use TV as their only passtime.
The other mediums do in fact have those types of fags too. They're just called x nerds/geeks. Gamer itself is just a term used for it instead.
Replace TV with youtube or netflix and it's equivalent.
It's socially acceptable to be on the internet every waking moment either at home or outside yet playing video games still carries a stugma.
>ENTER AT OWN RISK
What's the risk here, exactly? The hideous odor?
Honestly this thread sounds like it's just a bunch of youngfags. It's been accepted since 2005 and with each coming generation you'd be hard pressed to find someone that hasn't played some type of vidya they really enjoyed. No one is going to ostracize you like a bunch of jocks from an 80s flick. What you're confused about is the artificially manufactured aspect.
>Even if you're obsessed with a particular series, you probably don't watch it for more than 1 hour a week
negro, the last time this was true was maybe 10 years ago. showrunners and streaming services base their products around le binge watching
Ireland is still like this to an estent in 2020. We wore third worlders till like 100 years ago though so im not surprised
FPBP, video games have ruined the lives of every/v/ poster. Denying this is a cope
Are you retarded? There's always a sort of culture around forms of media or just about any activity as long as there are multiple people who constantly engage with it or/and are passionate about it.
Sure most people casually watch TV, movies, series etc but there are people dedicated to movies and the film making process, most readers also read casually, like a new, easy on the mind novel but there are people who delve into literature and form groups to discuss classics or even just go deeper into contemporary literature.
There are always the casual consumers/easygoing hobbyists and a more dedicated group or passionate people in general who have the same thing as one of their main hobbies/points of interest.
There's nothing unique about gaming in that regard.
Video games are only really interesting for the person playing, movies and TV you can watch with a group and enjoy together
Anything multiplayer was always fine in our house growing up (not online though) but the second somebody wanted the TV to themselves it was a problem
Ignore the Northerners/Cork/Limerickfags they don't know shit and are just being uncouth as fuck. As usual really.
>Video games are only really interesting for the person playing
Wrong. If that were true Twitch streamer would not be a profitable thing.
Sure I dont like video cuckholdry, but lil Zoom loves to watch others play video games instead of playing it themselves.
>Literally all media is a waste of time
Everything is waste of time if you think about it.
>"oi bro, do you movie?" or "i'm such a hardcore comicer dude"
They literally do. It’s called movie buffs. You only feel shame about video games because of the stigma against games which you are feeding by acting embarrassed and retarded.
No one cares, I'm buying it day 1
Can't wait to fuck around with all the narrative paths and different playstyles in night city. corpo all the way
You overestimate how these things work. People talk shit to you, you react, they keep talking shit. There is no societal stigma against vidya, mobile games are a thing. So are sports games.
You're conveniently ignoring people obsessed with capeshit so much they buy overpriced dolls/cry when watching trailers/lose their shit if they get spoiled. Also how everything that happens in the world is likened to something that happened in fiction, harry potter and star was fanboys being the worst offenders.
Normalfags are social media junkies with plenty of Netflix bingers to boot, Hell just about every second dad to this day watches too much TV, gaming has become way too normal if anything, just don't be a crippling porn addict in addition to it and you're better off than most people if anything.
