The game is very good, but the marketing (or lack thereof) made it difficult to ascertain what the game actually was. Was it stealth? Not exactly. Was it an action game? Not exactly. Horror? Somewhat, but not entirely. American audiences had no idea what the game was supposed to be and you only really knew if you watched the long gameplay demos JUST prior to the game coming out.
That said, it's a very strong game and I think it's one of Kojima's best, hands-down. But there's a bunch of reasons Americans didn't know what to think about it, not the least of which being cultural differences.
