The most important resource in yugioh is your cards. Your life points barely ever matter. It is better to have 6 cards in your hand and 100 life points that it is to have no cards in you hand and 8000 life points.

If you want a re-telling of the 5Ds story + some other stories made for the game, play TF3-6, would easily recommend those games since they are comfy and kinda date sim-ish.
Special is there only if care about dueling. The eng translation is garbage and full of meme garbage. Read the story if you know actual japanese. The story is limiting since you cant partner up with anybody you want.

Nightmare Troubadour is good if you want to play classic YGO, but it can be a loitle grindy the first half. The 5Ds games are pretty good, till you beat the story. Then there is nothing to do. Those were the ones I played on DS. The Zexal game on 3ds is.... not worth it.
