During the SNES and PSX eras, JRPGs were some of if not the best games around. Now there hasn't been a 10/10 JRPG in over two fucking decades. What the hell happened?

You grew up and gaming lost that "magic" that made those old games epic as fuck. if you want that magic back stop gaming for 30 years and pick it up again then

>in over two decades
BotW came out only a few years ago.

jrpgs are better now than ever before sans square enix

>During the SNES and PSX eras, JRPGs were some of if not the best games around.
Goodbye.

Horseradish. Music sucks, story sucks and the gameplay tries too hard.

>Music sucks
SMT is still going strong with OSTs, 4 being perhaps the best in the series. Xenoblade 1/2 are phenomenal. Falcom still pumping out good shit. Nier/Nier automata are fantastic. Again, only Square is doing worse in this regard without peak uematsu but even so soken/shimomura are still great.

>story
only one that can be argued to be true because xenogears/vagrant story are the peaks of the genre story wise

>gameplay tries too hard
AKA "I want braindead classic FF turn based". Gameplay is by far the best thing modern jRPGs excel at compared to the classics, even if you just take turn based combat into consideration.

This

No nostalgia. I mean, Dragon Quest is still around, and it is still literally the same game it's always been but with better graphics.

The same game which was always crap.

What horrendous taste in music you have. Were you born in a factory?

>The same game which was always crap.
Well yeah, JRPGs have always been crap.

I loved Octopath. Wish for more story depth and job customization in sequel.

DQ 11 was 10/10. Don't bother replying.

X2 will be perfect without rex .

>What horrendous taste in music you have. Were you born in a factory?
well what the fuck do you like? Mitsuda was the king of square's music back in the day and he's just as good now (if not better, his battle themes have improved since CT/xenogears/CC). Otherwise the only major loss the genre had is uematsu who's just gotten old, I guarantee you once sugiyama stops doing the OSTs, dragon quest will have better music.

People must've moved on I guess.
Really off-topic but I think it belongs in RPG threads like these. Does anyone have the picture template where its a bunch of weapons on the top side and a bunch of elements on the bottom and you connect them?

Japan makes way more hardcore RPGs than the west since Wizardry is still popular over there and Japan get official Wizardry sequels plus a bunch of clones that emulate Wizardry. Meanwhile western RPGs are just action games with lame choices you get to make during the story.

old good
new bad
This has rotted your brain

You are selling western RPGs short. They also have dating sims I'm them where you can choose among a number of square jawed women or homosexual men that act like a straight persons idealized version of gay men would act like.

After 2 decades, I still can't tell the difference between WRPG and JRPG. They just feel like RPGs. Unless the realistic stories? But I mean old WRPGs were just as comical.

>Zelda
>JRPG
here we go again, next you'll say Smash is a "fighting game", and Metroid Prime isn't a "FPS" but a "first person adventure".

There hasn't even been a 10/10 game and never will so it's been a lot longer than that.

Yeah, that's right. How did you know? Unless you're trying to tell me Zelda is a puzzle game.

Just play Bravely Default, it's the best Final Fantasy in the previous 10 years.

It's an action adventure.

>zelda is action adventure
>but not metroid prime
hmm

In the course of my career as a vidcon specialist (my own coinage, spend it wisely), I have never seen such blatant and frankly sickening ignorance as that exhibited by the "people" (if, in fact, they are homo sapiens at all, as their intelligence implies elsewise) that claim that Zelda is not an RPG. There is nothing that Shigeru "Shiggy" Miyamoto could possibly do to make the vidcon any more of an RPG as it meets every single criterion for being one, particularly that it takes place in an imaginary realm with a fantastical beastiary, the damsel villain ratio is at or above standards, and that the core emphasis of the gameplay is on bedazzling all foes with impeccable swords and sorcery. Furthermore, this line of thought can be extended to all vidcons in which the player controls a character (hence, roleplaying), though I cringe slightly at the thought of such mundane vidcons as Madden being RPGs, as they do not even include exotic weaponry such as the tonfa.

I'm in my late 30's and DQXIS is in my top 3 JRPGs of all time.

>clueless literal homosexual trying to talk about eroge
Fucking lol. Science needs to hurry up and provide the technology capable of detecting and destroying you fagets while still in the womb. You are disgusting beyond belief.

No 10/10 jrpg has ever come out. Some 8/10s, and a 9/10 or two, yes. But a 10/10? No way. I'd put resonance of fate up there as a 7/10, maybe 8/10. Last Remnant absolutely an 8/10 if you're willing to look into how the systems work. White Knight Chronicles (2) 7/10, multiplayer being alive made it a solid 9/10, but hey, nothing lasts forever. Lost Odyssey is totally a 9/10.
If you want to know what happened, people just stopped playing JRPGs. And other genres became more prevalent due to normalfags.

Just play etrian odyssey
