The internet, gaming, all the new tech was becoming "accessible" to the masses. I was in high school around that time and was a geeky kid, but no pariah. All the kids at the school still hung out together outside and the sports kids would take the geeks under their wings to teach them to skate or give em tips on form shooting hoops and the geeks would teach the sports kids the ropes of computers to make badass custom HTML MySpace profiles and to "hack" MSN messenger so you wouldn't have a timer on how often you could 'nudge' your friends chat windows.
There was a balance in the world and everyone got along and we weren't all a bunch of mentally ill political freaks.

Everything sort of fucked up around 7th generation, with 360 and PS3. It's where the cinematic cover brown shooter started.
Its' the generation where we got MGS4 and TLOU1 which basically enforced the idea of games being fucking movies.
It's when gaming started gaining mainstream traction with games like Portal and nerd culture started to become a product to sell to normies rather than bros hanging out.

Literally every game after that is just repeating the same formulas but more soulless/without understanding what worked.
A huge redpill is realizing more time passed between NOW and PS3 than fucking PS3 and SNES.
Look how many new games were created in that time, how much more creativity was common. Games from PS4/XONE and now Series and PS5 could be literally PS3 games if they just decided to lower the graphics a little (it's a literal case with PS5 since a launch title is a fucking remake of PS3 game).

It might be stupid but I'm holding out hope that things are going to loop back around. The cancel culture people are now starting to cancel cancel culture itself. The past few years we've seen people get #MeToo'd but they have the receipts and manage to show the whores crying to lawyers that they can't just lie for fame and profit. The suicides of people who have been cancelled are also starting to rally the people who originally cancelled people to shun cancel culture. They're starting to see that 'social justice' is defending people who maybe made a lewd joke then lose their reputation, then their job, then their wife and kids, then they foreclose on the house, trade in the car, can't find a job and shoot themselves in the head only for it to come out they just said some stupid shit at worst.
Eh, at the very least people are starting to rebel against and reject the tech giants they've spent the past decade monogamous with and branch out a bit. Mention Le*dit in front of the pretty quirky girl at your job and you'll know what I mean.
